this next project im starting will take a while because im not only on a budget but have very specific goals in mind AND one of them is to make use of cathers super secret squirrell blocks when they become availible.
but in the meantime im applying the basic water cooling principles and some tweeking and common sense ( not so common really) and a little modding skill to build a very high performance rig from standard stock aka stuff that most rigs already have or common items.
so just to give you a hint ill post some pics and let you figure out some of whats going on and then i might explain some of the benifits and later ( probly much later since im on a near non existant budget) testing my setup vs many other setups with the same fan pump setup ( so i can isolate rad and block and res variables)

and because im redundant
Let me guess, that's a Hydor L20/L30 my bet is L20 with a 3/4" inlet.
How far am I?

L35. barbless? ;)
Works a charm you know. Well worth it.
thorilan
06-14-04, 01:33 PM
its my spare L30 frm when i put my L35 in my system
the inlet ID of that thin wamm tube is 1 inch and will have a res to match. youll notice that it requires a 90deg. mount to do this

how r u going to clamp that sucker?
r u going to clamp it?
does it leak at all?

I demand details of this squirrel block.
thorilan
06-14-04, 02:36 PM
the tube will be glued on with the same stuff i make my resses with and then zipp tied
thorilan
06-14-04, 02:38 PM
i have to take pics after i cut and glue the res outlet and base plate so you can see how it will all fit together
hopefully ill get that done today or tommarrow

what kind of waterblock will you be using?
thorilan
06-14-04, 03:46 PM
most likely one of cathars secret design ones when they are availible

the next pics i will take i have to wait for the glue to dry so you can get a feel for the idea. that tube btw is the same size as the flexible tubing you saw earlyer so i will have to heat it up and stretch it over the outlet for a nice tight fit

Anything else done?
thorilan
06-20-04, 02:13 AM
the glue is called X2 and is in all japanese so thats all i can really tell you.
i dont have any money atm so untill i get a case / rad i cant do any more because i always build the Res to fit in the case . once i get a case/rad combo i can then make the final decision on the heigth and what angle and spacing to drill the inlets. so just need to know what case i will have for final decisions then it will all flow together ( pun intended)
currently i was thinking of a wavemaster or a lianli pc60 but i would like a specialy modded bonnaville core to make 2 parallel 1pass cuircuts. ( will require buying 2 of them just to have end cap of second one) unless i can find a more suitable core
see i want the core orientation a specific way because of how i plan on mounting the pump.
thorilan
06-27-04, 04:21 PM
ok a little update since i know what case i will put the stuff in once i get the money
i chose a pc60 because of its internal dimentions being similar to a pc75
anyways the next pics are PRE GLUEING and are just to show you basicaly what the hanging res will look like
the bottom outlet is intentionaly huge because it will be dropping water directly into the pump which would be rotateed 90 degrees

06-28-04, 08:21 AM
Wow, that's really interesting
Do you trust that glue so much tho? Aren't you going to isolate the bottom of the res so there won't be any leaks?
sandman001
06-28-04, 11:37 AM
Seems to me you'll get a vortex going in that res.
thorilan
06-28-04, 01:30 PM
nope have a way to prevent the vortex=)
and yes i trust the glue. if you have seen some of my other resses made from the same stuff you youd know that i havent had any leeks yet ( though i do major testing first)
threeputt
06-28-04, 01:36 PM
IMO, it will look cooler with vortex...
thorilan
06-28-04, 07:44 PM
yeah and a vortex would complletely negate the purpose of reducing cavitation at the inlet hence the trouble of the special design
thorilan
07-02-04, 07:33 PM
ok i finished basic no pressure leak testing of barbs and bottom joints. so got a few more pics.
thorilan
07-02-04, 07:35 PM
that last pic shows the glue i use which is in japanese so maybe that will stop people from sending me PMs all the time asking.
this next one is better

07-02-04, 10:11 PM
Very nice... I think I'll try to make my own res some time... Question... Is that two inlets to the res? If so, you'll have 2 loops with one pump? This seems very interesting... how about little more details?
thorilan
07-02-04, 10:21 PM
the second inlet is multi purpose. for now it will just be for filling the res but later i can use it for second loop for say a NB vid card loop

First off, wow, amazing craftsmanship once again Thorilan !!. Excellent idea, though im not sure how youre preventing the vortex?
Also I am intrigued by your case. Whats that green PCB w/ the oldschool NB heatsink doing in your case. I dont mean to therad jack or anything so dont even comment on it.( send me a PM with a link to some pics of your system if you have the time.) Thanks for all the inspiration.
SenC
thorilan
07-03-04, 05:40 AM
that is a old 4 port lynksys router that i added heatsinks to
the vortex will be prevented by a copper mesh screen going over the outlet hole. ( not shown cause i have to go to shibuya to get it still)
the other pics can be found here

slick
does the router serve a purpose?? is it actually in use?
thorilan
07-03-04, 05:48 AM
it was in use but it has some stability issues so i have since switched to a diferent one but am to lazy to take the old one out of the case
Senater_Cache
07-03-04, 05:54 AM
btw thanks for the link.
Thats a cool idea with the router. I might add a little pice of non functional high-tech looking PCB like that by the window. That way I can hide my pump behind it.(youre doing that too right?)
Im getting the L35, how do you like it so far Throilan?
SenC.
thorilan
07-03-04, 06:02 AM
definately no complaints. better than a ehiem 1250 by about 250% for size power and heat
actualy i have the pump above the Psu
( this system was designed for looks not high performance even though it has a L35 and a silver cascade first batch
thorilan
07-03-04, 06:06 AM
oh the res in this thread im building is for a diferent comp btw . gonna use a pc60 lian li and design it for performance using cathars new design blocks once hes finished
thorilan
07-22-04, 11:56 PM
more updates.=)
thorilan
07-22-04, 11:57 PM
notice the string and mesh
thorilan
07-22-04, 11:59 PM
the string is just to hold the mesh in place while the glueing is being done because it will be glued in position upside down so i can make sure the position is square using my uber secret method!
thorilan
07-23-04, 12:01 AM
notice the mesh disc is almost the perfect size to fit in the tube . it will have some play though .
thorilan
07-23-04, 12:02 AM
next is prep for glueing
thorilan
07-23-04, 12:04 AM
here is the first part of my secret for getting the tube in correct postion.
thorilan
07-23-04, 12:05 AM
and part 2 of how i align everything. notice the fine technilogical hardware and technique used to do this!
thorilan
07-23-04, 12:07 AM
and finaly some glue action ( somehow that reminds me of jr high super glue and toilet seats , not that i ever did anything like that ;) )
thorilan
07-23-04, 12:11 AM
now to let it all dry and test it out for leaks
hope to have more about it soon but i cant force the glue to cure any faster without risk to project
ahh that reminds me . need to go to tokyu hands ( not tokyo) and get a good 1/2 inch ball valve for the fill.
thorilan
07-23-04, 06:56 AM
go figure.
after coming back from the store i found and bought another screen almost the same as the one you see inside the res except its copper only. im hesitant to take it apart just to replace the screen so will leave it the way it is untill i see some possible oxidization which may not occure depending on how much nickle is in the steel
pwnt by pat
07-23-04, 01:05 PM
Man that's sexy... Are you planning on hand crafting almost everything? Are you going to fill elsewhere or maybe drill and tap a set screw in the top?
The Big One
07-23-04, 02:05 PM
what is the perpose of the mesh in the res?
thorilan
07-23-04, 02:18 PM
the purpose of the mesh is to stop suction created vortexs .
you remember watching the water drain from your bath tub with a wide 1 inch opening into the drain. well imagine a pump sucking action that already creates cavitation.
as for doing everything by hand. pretty much but what you see will be nearly complete. i may suspend it from the top of a case using very thick military grade retainer bands ( like rubber bands but much thicker )
i could actualy seal the res directly to the pump and suspend all of it to completely elliminate vibration but i think that eventualy the vibration stress would make the seal break and cause a leak. hence the tubbing bridging gap
Senater_Cache
07-23-04, 03:27 PM
Everything is coming together I see.
Nice screen!
Cant wait to see that screen in action.
Best of luck.
