I just tried to login to steam and there is this box that pops up saying Steam is checking for updates. but after i wait a while it says it couldn't connect to the server... i retried like 5 times and it still isn't working. what do i do?

EDIT: i tried reinstalling steam, but now it says there is a library error :(

1.Try deleting the steam folder re-install.

Or it could be your Protocal type, (Aol) the best uk advertised isp use a diffrent type of Protocal so some games won't let me play other Standerd Protocal users

it just happened to alot of users, no updates though - so probably something fell over :)

best to check the forums at steampowered if you have problems like that as you will usually see a list of "steam down?"'s

When steam does this, and they do it a lot, I just wait a day or too and it's fixed. Atleast they didn't delete your favorites list and ALL your settings.

Does steam save your favorites in a server, or on your local machine? i lost my favorites during the reinstall :(

it keeps favourites and history etc in the steam/config folder...I think its the masterservers.vdf and serverbrowser.vdf that hold such information, try keeping them on the next install :)
