View Full Version : How intensive have you STRESS tested your overclocked Celeron 2???

I just upgraded my Abit BH6 1.0 to Celeron 2 600MHz/66 retail plus Super Slocket III. Win 2000 will crash very quickly at 900 MHz and 1.7v. It runs fine at 1.8v.

So I started by stress testing it by running prime95 v 20.6 (http://www.mersenne.org/prime.htm). I got errors until I up the voltage to 1.9.

Next I installed cpuburn 1.4 (http://users.ev1.net/~redelm/). There are basically 3 proggies of interest in the package: burnp6, burnmmx, and burnbx. Since these run at priority 9 by default, I changed the run priority of prime95 to 9 as well (click Advanced > priority). I then run one of the cpuburn prog and prime95 at the same time and verified that they each used 50% of CPU via taskmgr. This is definitely a more stressful test since I got errors in prime95 quickly.

I am now resetting clock to 66MHz and voltage to 1.7 to get a baseline test. burnmmx and prime95 are running happily without errors.

So my observation thus far is that though you may overclock you Celeron and it run fine under normal load, you will get error under stress. I am not sure overclocking is w/o penalties, unless your get a system that is error free under HEAVY STRESS.

I'd like to see others share their experience. Thanks!

the thing is, in real life you wont get that kind of stress, 3d programs, dont put that much stress, if youre able to run cpuburn for 10-15 mintues without erors, you know you have a stble system.....

Folding at home can get as much a 99.0% of your cpu power it just depends on how much you have running. Seti is alos the same way.

Try this for a stress test.
One folding at home client and one seti client at the same time let it run for 48hrs with out a break. Thats a good way to burn in. I forget where the power switch is. My system has up times of like 8 days before I power down

Well, the intent of my starting this thread is to share experience on overclocked systems under STRESS. I think the test I did is the most strenuous.

It helps if you are using win 2000 or other OS that allows you to finely control the running priorities of programs. I have not looked at Folding, but believe SETI is run at a lower priority. The implication is that it will yield and does NOT contribute stress to the system.

Another thing that's worthy to point out is that I haven't got any errors in cpuburn. I do get many errors in prime95. I also get blue screens in win 2k that I do not normally observe. So while cpuburn or other programs are very good at stressing CPUs, they are not good or reliable at reporting errors.

I think prime95 is very good at reporting error. Running it with cpuburn with a 50/50 load is a very good if not the best test. This way, you have two CPU intensive programs that compete equally, and one of them is very sensitive to errors.

If you want to find out how your system behaves under stress, it's a good idea you run the test I described. And please share your experience here. Btw, my system is still error-free at 66 MHz, so there is a difference!!

Yes I know I do run cpuburn I was just trying to throw up some other ideas for you to try

Ive lasted CPUBurn under high priority for 3 days then it crashed (or it couldve just been winME).
