Ok, I want to share internet with my friend, and he is a bit less than 10 miles away. I think that if I put a cantenna on my router and he gets a cantenna, and we line them up, he would get a signal. Am I wrong? I have at my disposal a satellite dish too, a large direct tv dish. Would it be too hard to modify this?

If you can see his house from yours then it should work. You may need a signal booster though (the FCC won't like that very much but they shouldn't bother you if you don't go overboard on the signal boosting) and it might cut out in bad weather (rain, snow, etc).

hyperlinktech.com sells a 24db grid antenna that would be perfect for your use for around $50.
A way to make a "super" cantenna is to make a normal cantenna and then get an aluminum funnel (for a drainpipe) from a hardware store that fits over the can. It can add another 3db or so.

i believe aiming athe cantenna at the dish would give you like 15db gain :)

Can I replace the reciever in the dish with a wireless internet reciever(whatever you call them)? Ill need to make a tower, but that should be easy. So realy all I need is a dish on my house, pointed fairly well in his direction, and then to line up his cantenna until he gets the best signal strenght?
Yeah, I've heard sattelite dishes are fairly easy to mod to work. Just replace the existing reciever on it with a cantenna (or other antenna), and you should get even more dB for your signal.
This (http://www.wwc.edu/~frohro/Airport/Primestar/Primestar.html) page talks about modding a Primestar sattelite dish for wireless operation.
