I have a new Duron 900, and a Global Win FOP32-1 heatsink on an ASUS A7V133 motherboard. The on-board temp sensor states that my CPU is running just over 50 degrees Celsius. Tom's hardware was able to get an Athalon 1000 to run at about 41 degrees C with this same heatsink. Is there any trick I should have performed prior to installing the heat sink. I did remove the thermal tape on the heatsink and replaced it with some goop. Thanks

There may be a difference between how you measure you CPU temperature and how it was measured in the system that Tom's Hardware used. While I have never used an ASUS motherboard, their reputation for doing a poor job determining the CPU temperature is fairly common knowledge. The consensus of what I have read is that they generally report a higher temperature than is actually occurring.
My first CPU and HSF was a Duron and FOP-32. The FOP-32 does a very respectable job of cooling for the price. With mine, after I removed the TIM pad, I noticed it had a fairly rough finish on the baseplate. I lapped mine and it improved the effectiveness of the cooling. A good finish, combined with a quality thermal grease will really help. Right behind that is having adequate through-case airflow to allow the FOP-32 to do its job as well as possible.

hoot is right about the asus thermal probe. It usually reports temps about 5-10C too high. I would also wonder what their ambient temps are. If you are around 45C with the FOP 32-1 you are doing great.

William, are you suggesting that one of those reviews may have cooled the room to say 18c and then recorded the temps??? hehe

Hmmmm.....Maybe I'll try that!!

The review at http://www6.tomshardware.com/cpu/01q2/010521/

says what the ambient temp was. Something around 22, I believe. A tad bit under my dorm room without AC in the summer.
