hello all, i was wondering if i t would be worth it to get a 120 mm fan adapter to a 60 mm one for my cpu, i have a 1.33ghz athlon, with thermoengine+delta 38cfm fan. would i beable to o/c higher, or would it be worthit to get 2 thermosonic ramsinks then put a 120mm fan above them sucking the hot air from the 512 mb pc-166 ram? also is it true that the cooler the ram is, the better preformance it has?

The cooler any semiconductor device is, the better it will perform. As for your RAM chips, if you have adequate through-case airflow, they should not need heatsinks on them.

As for adapting a 120mm fan down to a 60mm HS, I believe you will find that there are physical room limitations in a mid-tower. The ThermoEngine, when combined with the 38cfm Delta is an effective cooling package. Aside from reducing the noise that goes along with using the Delta 38cfm fan, I doubt that you will see any significant temperature reduction going with a larger fan and reducer. What you may run into is too much weight on the CPU socket lugs that the clips hook onto and that can cause them to snap or cause the ThermoEngine not to sit flat upon the CPU core whe the case it standing up and the motherboard is sideways.

The ThermoEngine and Delta 38 is a hard package to improve upon. All you can do is make sure you have adequate through-case airflow to enable it to do its job. Lapping its baseplate will yield a 1 or 2 degrees of improvement, but that's about it.

If you want lower CPU temps, about all you can do is get a different HSF.

Well as for the fan adaptor.. you would be paying say $20-$30 for the adaptor alone and another $15 for the fan and it will probably not fit. $30-$50 you can buy a sk6 or gladiator that will work fine.

thanks all just curious abot little things that might make improvements. well i figured out what to do with the 50 bucks i had laying around... get a new psu, by the time that gets in i should have my cpu, and case. this sucks after a 1.5 months of waiting i finally get to return my cpu.. man i have'nt even got to turn the thing on yet...but at least when i do it sure will be speedy with that pc 166 ram 512mb on win 2k. man this is gonna be a beast of a comp.ehh well at least a place to play solitaire, and mind sweeper.

not!!!!! foldin all night, games all day.
Id just like to say Hoot is a really nice person who answers all my stupid questions.

i wouldnt if i were you.... it doesnt really perform better if i remember correctly...

i never used a 120 to 60... but i made a 80 to 60 adapter before... it was on my pep66

80 on pep66 @ 12v was equiv to my delta at 7v

Keep in mind that 80mm fans come in different capacities. They can range from 12V 0.14A (1.68W) to 12V 0.35A (4.2W) so they output different cfms and have different pressure-producing capabilities. The higher the power rating the more voluminous the airflow (and noisier).

i used the 80mm 47 cfm panaflo... vs the 60mm delta 38 cfm

the 60 had more pressure i believe... thats why even at 7v, it outperformed the 47cfm at 12 volts

fan adapters perform better if ther're sucking air.
