I have herd some people talk about using Win2k3 instead of XP. What do you all think of this? The rig will be a gamer/workstation.
Thanks,

Doesn't 03 not have the driver support of XP? In any case it seems foolish to use a server operating system for a gaming machine. *shrug*

Indeed. That's what 2003 is. Basically WinXP Pro with server extensions, similar to Win2K Pro and Server. At least, that's what I've gotten out of my MCP classes in the last week (we're working with 2003 Server right now).
If you're already using XP, there shouldn't be any difference between them.

i get ya..i have herd though that if you take server2003 and turn off some of the services that it is faster..but idk thats why im askin..
but when you are talking like dual xeons, with ht that would show up as quad procs..so you would have to use 2003 wouldnt you because xp only supports 2 procs?..
Thanks,

server is optimized for bigger data structures. sure i guess it would work. but why. don't use a native server os to do something its not meant to do. xp works fine. if its not broke don't fix it.

No worries. There are some links in that thread that show how to optimize 2k3 to run more efficiently in a workstation type environment. It wasn't really convincing enough for me to switch over though.
