Thats my question:)

Well I only start freaking out when My CPU gets over about 50C max load.

You would prolly want to keep the MAX temp under load under 50C to feel comfortable. but a few degrees over that shouldnt do much harm.

i think anything under 60C full load is fine....i m personally running at 43C idle 48C full load

First of all, Welcome to the fourms.

Some system specs would be helpful, particularly the motherboard, CPU and heat sink fan.

Although a lot of people will recommend keeping the temps below 50C, this will depend on the motherboard that you are using, more specificly, the temps as reported by the motherboard. There are a lot of variations between the motherboard manufactures reported temps. For instance, it has been said that the ASUS motherboards report the CPU temp as much as 10C higher than actual, my experience has confirmed this. I would recomend that if you are using a board that is known to return unreliable readings, you should be more concerned with an unexplained increase than the temp as reported. This is after you have gotten the system stable at whatever speed and have a good cooling solution.

On my ASUS boards, during these hot summer days, I strive to keep my temps below 60C as reported by the ASUS Probe. This would probably be way too high on some of the other boards. On my FIC boards for instance, the temps are generally 8 to 10C lower with the same CPU's and HSF's.

Good Luck!

There is no problem with the thermal probe on the board, just the program "asusprobe". Download mbm5 and u will get the right temp. exactly 10c lower

I have used MBM5 and found it no more reliable than the ASUS Probe. In my experience, when installed this program reports the temps exactly the same as ASUS Probe. In fact MBM5 gives you the option to alter the reading reported either up or down as neccessary to acommodate the variations you will get from motherboard manufacturer to manufacturer. I don't see where the benefit is when you have to make subjective adjustments and you still have no reliable benchmark from which to start.

Keep in mind that I have an early release of this program and hopefully they've addressed this problem.

I've tried this program in both WIN ME and WIN 2000 Pro.

As I'm writng this, I've checked the temps under both the ASUS Probe as well as MBM5 (each one running independently of each other and closed when not in use). The reported temperature is 64C either way. This system is, ASUS A7V133, T-BIRD 1G @ 1.4 (140*10), Global Win WBK38, ASII

I have a lot of money invested in these systems and I don't think there's any substitute for common sense. I don't think that I'm too conservative either, after all an 84% increase from a DURON 600 to 1100MHz on an A7V is pretty gratifying, and I believe would be deemed a success by anybody.

Ive at present got one pc with a 750 duron oc to 850 on standard voltage. If you look at the bios temp at start up after playing Q3 for 2-3hrs it will give me a temp of 46C but imediately on going into windows the cpu shows on the asus probe as 56C same if i check on inital boot up at start of the day the asus probe is almost exactly 10C higher than real temps.

duron 750@850 will do 1ghz but bloody hot and loud with the old blowers going not great for encoding whilst sleepin lol :)

I have an 800Mhz Duron running at 1Ghz. It normally runs at 36ºC Idle and 39ºC Load. I dont ever want to take the hsf off because my temps are damn good considering its summer. Shame my athlon couldn't run a little cooler, I would be less worried about the chipped corner then. BTW before you ask I am running at 1.8v with a ThermoSonic Delta applied w/ ASOne.

Sorry to jump in a little off topic somewhat,

Does the thermocouple probe under the cpu have to physically contact the cpu? I had to bend down the probe on my Abit KT7A just to install the CPU and theres probably a 1/32" gap now.

Also I loaded the Abit VIA HW Mon warez, and it reads:
CPU 46c
system 40c

MBM5 reads:
Sensor1 VIA686B-1 @ 23c
Sensor2 VIA686B-2 @ 40c

Maybe I configured MBM5 wrong? I just built the TBird900 box and havent OC'd it yet.

Any ideas?

Thanks, Doug
