hi all i am getting ready to overclock my P4 and was wondering what was the safe limit for load/idle temps for the p4, i dont want it to get hot enough to shorten the life of the chip. My current system:
abit th7-raid mobo
P4 1.7ghz
256mb samsung RDRAM
geforce 2 ultra
DD mazeP4 waterblock
4"x4"x4" reservoir
eheim 1250 pump
DD cooling cube W/120mm fan pulling
idle temp while typing this 38C
max load temp with cpu stressing utility 44C
max load temp in 3D games stressing utility 43C
case temp 30C
i hope to get this thing to 2ghz but i do not know the safe heat limit, i hope to keep this thing cool :) any help or suggestions is GREATLY appreciated.

When you talk about shortening the life of your chip you know that overclocking will definatly shorten the life of your CPU but there is some good news instead of lasting 25 years it will now only last 20 years and by that time your CPU will be a relic in the PC world as far as heat when you overclock your CPU will not be able to take tempatures that it will now so cooler is better, personaly i think your temps are too hot now. They way heat works with a overclock is this if its too hot your CPU will become unstable before it will fry itself and again the higher you overclock the lower your temps will need to be ,if my p3 1g gets to 35C it will definatly lock up but i'm really pushing it. Every CPU will act differently with temps so there is no set number but if you want the most out of your CPU i would recomend keeping it well below 40C under full load.

hmm i see, well if my temps are too hot the block must be seated incorectly? i am watercooling for gods sake, i only have the cheap radio shack thermal compound on it tho..how cool should i expect this thing to be running none overclocked with the watercooling rig i have now?

lets see, using As2 would give you a degree at most(which still makes a diff in ocing), and if you were air cooling i would say those te,mps are fine, try tightening down the clamp on the waterblock(not too much though), also intel says you cna take the chip up to 75 without damaging the cpu, so your fine on that note.......

Get your case temps down. And the temp of the air going through the radiator.

You might also consider how you get the temps. If it doens't use the internal diode (I don't know how the Abit boards are setup for Intels at all) then you might consider a better temp monitor...

AS Thelemac said your temps will depend on your ambient temps but i would think you should be in the 35C or lower at full load range, case temps will definatly affect your temps overall. with 25C for ambient i'm running 26C or 27C at the most for case temps and at idle my CPU temps are at ambient but this is for a p3 and not a 4 but i have not heard that they [p4] run that hot.

just out of curiosity how do you have the air flow set up on your radiator? Oh and radioshack compound is not bad so the compound would not be a factor in your temps being where there at.

1st i'de like to thank all you guys for all the replys :) and i have
1 120mm fan sucking air through the radiator, i will try to decrease case temps currently i only have 1 huge 120mm fan in it other then the one on the radiator, but the thing was so thick i hade to mount it on the side of my case outside of it all together.. i wil try and put another 120mm on it somewhere as i have 2 that i bought and never used still in packages
