Hey everyone,

New here. I'm gettin a few opioninos on this subject. Already gotten a few from another board.

I jst build a system... (which will eventually be overclocked... is running std right now) and I'm a little bit disturbed by the cooling results. I don't have the os yet, so it's only at bios screen being checked from there.

The system is: (onlly relevent info)

MB: Gigabyte 7DXR
CPU: TB 1.333Ghz AYHJA 0123EPTW
HSF: GW CAK38
CASE: Antec SOHO 1030B
PS: HEC-350LD-T
Thermal Compound: Artic Silver II
Fans:
Only the 2 exhosts that came with the case. Antec fans.

Okay, now the temps from sittin inside the bios. I'm not sure of the ambient... but it's somewhat warm. These temps are stabilized.

Side Open:
51C CPU
28C System

Side Closed:
52C CPU
28C system

Air flow doesn't seem to have anything to do with it, considering the 1 degree raise. The heatsink is very slightly warm to the touch. I'm wondering if I didn't get a great connection between the heatsink and cpu die.

Question:

1)
Is that the probable cause... or would this temp be consider'd normal for the setup I have? I don't think it will allow me a great deal of room for ocing.

2)
Would u recommend taking off the heatsink and redoing the placement and thermal compound... maybe trying to use less compound?
2A)
Should I try and lap the heatsink before reinstalling.. it seem'd pretty rough on the bottom?
2a)
I was thinking lying the sheets of sandpaper on a plate of glass on table, then moving the heatsink across it to assure a flat surface. Is this a good way?
2B)
Should I pull the mb out of the case to do this, or should I attempt it in the case, with case layed on it's side? (for hsf removal + install)

3)
Anything else u wanna add:)

TIA

i have the same case with almost the same fan setup but i went5 out and bought another fan put it in the very lower front blowin in lowered teps bout 1c so im goin to get a better heatsink and fan (sk6 w/ delta 38 cfm) and 2 92mm put on the side of the case as intake and one on the very top as exaust 120mm ystech. That should be the best air cooling you could get.

Would u recommend taking off the heatsink and redoing the placement and thermal compound... maybe trying to use less compound? Maybe [if you used to much] but it does take a day or two for temps to become normal when
using AS-2

Should I try and lap the heatsink before reinstalling.. it seem'd pretty rough on the bottom? It would not hurt allthough if your going to overclock you will need a good HSF a top of the line one most people with a great overclock with your chip are water cooled your CPU is going to put off quite a bit of heat when overclocked.

I was thinking lying the sheets of sandpaper on a plate of glass on table, then moving the heatsink across it to assure a flat surface. Is this a good way? Getting a small piece of glass that will fit in your hand would be better start with 400grit do figure eight patterns until flat then polish out with 600 some people will go all the way to 1500 but after 600 the gains are not that much, everyone who lapps will get different results though but most get cooler temps.
2B)
Should I pull the mb out of the case to do this, or should I attempt it in the case, with case layed on it's side? (for hsf removal + install) No its not really neccesary to pull it out just use caution not to rock the HSF on the CPU die or you could crack it.
3)
Anything else u wanna add:) Thats one thing about AMD they do run hot and the trick to a succesful overclock is cooler CPU temps so most ppl go water cooling and matbe even adding pelts to cool even more. At this point if i where you i would spend some time reading through the post and get a good idea [make a game plan] on what you want and how much you want to spend, there are a few good overclocks with aircooling but you had better get a good one.

Thanks to all for the opinions. The GlobalWin CAK38 is suppose to be a pretty good HSF. Loud, heavy and a pain in the arse to install r the complaints I have heard, but everything seems to point to it being a very capable cooler, so I'm gonna try reseating the hsf, and lapping it. Thanks on the tips for related that. And thanks to wildbilly on ur ideas on air flow. I'm gonna work on that, but not for a little bit. I'm not having airflow probs at the moment though.
Thanks
