I picked up the sirC32cam, or W32.sircam worm somewhere in the last couple of days.It appears to be the kind that replicates itself through outlook express, by replying to everybody in inbox. Here is the link to the fix from Symantec (http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.sircam.worm@mm.html) I ended up with it on all my rigs and attempted to get rid of it but I ended up shutting down all except the five in my room. I have to disconnect all network cables and go through them all again, to find out what I missed. Anyone recieving an email from me, dlairdb@cox.rr.com, DELETE IT!!
Sorry guys. :o

sorry to hear that. Viruses are nasty things. I love outlook express but people should really consider using something like Eudora or Web based Pop3 to avoid stuff like this. Also, keep those Virus scanners updated! Thanks for the warning Stanman.

Ya a relelative sent me that same virus about 3 days ago. I called him right away and it turns out the whole family has it. Good rule of thumb NEVER open attachments.

Ok Stanman, thanks for the warning. I never use Outlook (express), and I don't think its even installed... :)

That doesn't mean that you can't get it sent to you from someone who does. I normally did not use it either, but I recently put 2k on a couple and went ahead and used it. :(

Its cool I wouldn't have even known that unless I had read up on it. I love killing time at cnet
Last night I was downloading from morpheus and picked up CiH 1.2.
I wasn't too pleased with that.
my scanner noticed it before the file completed download so i was okay.
Anyone know what happens on modern motherboards when a virus attacks the cmos and over writes it?
is there a way of setting the mb to non flash mode on an abit kt7a?
if you use outlook then turn off the preview plane. then you wont have to worry about 99% of messages with virus's and worms. i think some still get through but i havent gotten a virus through outlook yet.

Don't kill time, it's all you have, when you run out, you are out of luck. :(

Forget Symantec antivirus and Outlook, try AntiviralToolkitPro (AVP) is the best, and The Bat.
I've saved the box of a friend last week with the same virus, nothing lost!

Yeah, I would never use norton antivirus, it stinks. I just saw that sirC32cam running in my task manager and searched for it to find out what it was and symantec was the first page that came up, so I downloaded the fix. Basically I don't want any Symantec software on my rigs. It's worse than a virus. I tried Command Antivirus lately and it's not bad. :)

Follow my way, AVP is really the best at the moment, and seems that another famous antivirus use the same search engine of AVP!!!

Nothing wrong with Norton Antivirus. Been using it for 3 years at work and never had a problem with any of the users on my network. We have received virus after virus from other corporate email systems, but not one person got infected thanks to Norton Antivirus.
If you really want to get rid of your security issues, get rid of MS and everything they produce. hahah.
there is alot wrong with norton antivirus. it not only slows down your system, it also screws up your system.
listen to thedoors. avp is good.

Well, my personal experience and opinion is totally different about Norton antivirus, doesn't work really good with troian's and other kind of virus.

Plus it's a major resource hog. :(

Use TDS3 it makes Norton look like it is 1000% crap I found things with TDS that no other anti virus scanner ever found.
You should be able to find it at cnet. TDS2 was better than TDS3 for layout but TDS3 has it beat hands down because it can detect the new trojans that can hid themselfs in soemthing almost like a zip file. Somehow they change size and that is what is throwing Norton that and its crap

Yeah, that looks pretty good AmbientFiction, I found the download page for Diamondcs TDS-3 (http://tds.diamondcs.com.au/html/frameset_download.htm). I think I will try it. :)

Well, as usual, my experience has been different.
I support a local area network of 500-700 users at any given time. Norton Antivirus has never let me down and the resource use is negligible. I've used it at home before with Windows and I was very pleased with it. My parents used to have a virus problem every other month until I installed Norton. Now they never call me to fix a virus problem. F-Prot is also an excellent piece of software. However, now that I run Linux, I have no use for either of em.
Everybody has their own opinion, just go with what works for you.
For example, I see a lot of people on here bragging about how good IBM hard drives are. Well, over 4 years working in the IT field, IBM hard drives have had the worst reliability/quality of any brand that I've seen. I've worked with Maxtor, WD, IBM, Seagate, and Quantum. In the last 4 months, I've seen 10+ IBM hard drives die. Those hard drives were less than 6 months old. The only other hard drive that died on me was a Maxtor and it had to be 4 years old. I've spoke with other IT professionals that have had the same type of experience with IBM hard drives. Anyway, you guys can buy IBM hard drives all you want, but you couldn't pay me to use one in my home system.
when i had a win2k linux machine norton though my linux drive was a virus. norton internet security is a joke. half of the time it makes every picture on the page turn into an X depending on the setup. it hogs resources and it run about 5 processes in the background. bad bad bad.
and my ibm drive has been awesome so far.
Now I'm really depressed (just kidding) I've tried many free
virus programs, got tired of them timming out on me. So
last week I actually purchased a brand new Norton Av.
Oh well :) I still use Netscape for mail. I only use norton for
checking boot & mail, it dosen't seem to slow anything down,
ecpt. boot time no biggi. Honestly I'v only had one virus ever,
was the happy99(98?) got a seprate progi for that. But I
stay away from "shaddy sights" and I don't get a lot of mail.
No friends lol.
The hard drive is an older one, but man is it quiet, can't hear it
at all! (over the fans ;) )

In the PC business when a customer would drop off their machine with windows probs the first thing I checked for was Norton. It was also the first thing I removed if they did have it. 90% of the time I removed it, they had no problems after.
I recommend McAfee over Norton to people, and I REALLY dont like all the extra bloatware you get with Norton so nothing lost there. I also like Trends online scanner, I use it on machines here sometimes, small install.

One thing that needs to be mentioned is that Linux isn't virus free, infact an example is Worm.Cheese, AVP has a version for Linux, about the others I dunno!?
