I bought an external USB 2.0 hard drive enclosure off eBay and put a WD 4gb in it with a fresh FAT32 formated partition w/system files.
When I plug it into my rig, it first comes up and installs drivers on some sort, and asks me to restart. Then when I restart and plug it in again, it says there was an error and my device may not work properly. From there on out when I plug it in the 'remove device safely' icon comes on in the task bar for about 5 seconds, then dissapears. Nothing has ever come up in my computer.
For a test I plugged it into my 2nd rig and it popped up in my computer in about 5 seconds, no restart or anything! Worked great!
Both have XP Pro, my rig has all updates including SP1. the 2nd rig has no updates. Specs for my rig are below with the motherboard running a VIA chipset if that matters.
Any ideas?? Anything?? I've tried taking out all the usb drivers, and letting XP find them again, but it didn't help. I also tried to get new USB drivers from aOpen, but they wouldn't install!! I've thought about rolling back the USB drivers, but I'm not sure that would do anything.
