View Full Version : 1.4 tbird overheating

just bought myself a 1.4 tbird (AYHJA/266) and an asus A7V133.
this baby will overclock to 11.5x136 on default voltage but she'll overheat when I leave her on too long. even at default clockspeed she overheats after a while :(
the built in asus thermometer reports 52c idle and crashes when it hits 61-62c. I've tried both a thermaltake volcano-5 and an alpha PAL6030 on it, both seems to cool equally.
I have my case totally open, room temp is +/- 25c, I've applied a little paste, etc etc. the problem seems to be that this chip is just way too hot! the heatsink is hot to the touch and the fan is blowing hot air but it just can't cool it fast enough.
any tips? should I spend $ on a nice alpha? (if so, can someone point me to a place that will ship to vancouver canada). sorry about the novel I wrote, thanks for your help.
p.s. I'd like to avoid peltier/water cooling/dielectric fluid/etc.

nobody? :(
how much difference would it make if I got the best alpha heatsink for my system? ( as opposed to the current volcano5 or alpha PAL6030). any other tips for cooling my cpu? thanks

First off welcome to the boards.
I would remount it, to make sure that it is seated properly. I'm not sure what the problem is that hsf should not be letting it get that hot. Are you using artic silver or a thermal pad. If you are using a pad I would remove it and get some artic silver asap.
Other than that I don't know what to tell you but stick around a while I'm sure you'll get some helpful responces.

BTW what is your core voltage at? Many boards run at over voltage. With my kk266 when set at 1.75 it is actually 1.82, so I set it down to 1.6 something to get it to run at 1.75 which is the default voltage for tbirds and the lower the voltage the lower the temp. Something to look into anyway.
If your heatsink is warm or hot to the touch, then it is removing heat from the CPU, but not getting rid of that heat fast enough. If it was, it would be close to the temperature of the air in the room since you have the cover off. If that was my situation, I would get more air flowing through the heatsink, which usually equates to a heatsink fan that moves more air. Get that challenge resolved and you can move on to the next one.

thanks for the replies and welcome guys.
well I am using a thin layer of silicone paste (though not the nice silver compound one) and the heatsink is definitely seated properly (it's damn hot so it must be conducting heat)
I also tried lowering the voltage to 1.7 in the bios(it's now steady at 1.744) and that lowered the temp down to 48c idle.

well I have a 5000rpm fan and she's blowing real good ;) but the air being blown is quite cold. for some reason this heatsink is not passing on the heat. that's why an alpha with thinner & more fins came to mind. I'll try more powerful fan though, thanks for the tip
In my experence booth of those heat sinks are NOT going to cool that processor I had the alpha pal 6035 on my 1.2 and temps hit 52-55c under load when system was at 1.33,,,10x133.
I installed the SK6 and delta 38 fan and if you look at sig I am in way better shape, clocked a lot higher,And over 10c cooler...

I had similar problems 1.4's run realy warm, i had temps around 60 degress c just from loading windows. I added a delta fan to my standard cooler master heat sink and that dropped it by 15 to 20 degress. Get your self a delta or similar rpm fan, would be my advise. The deltas are noisy!!!!!
good luck

I just got an 8K7A+ with a 1.3 T-Bird and used my trusty Alpha 6035 PAL and ran it right up to 53 C in a hurry!!!
I have 2 case fans and upsized the 80mm in the rear (exhausting to 92mm), but ended up installing the DYNATRON copper finned unit with the 60mm noisy Delta... am now running at 41 C with the same setup, idle. I need a little better case cooling, It still gets up to 47 C under load, but seems much more stable. Just running at 1440 though.
The Alpha did a good job on my 700 Athlon overclocked to 850, but just doesn't get it for these hot puppies. I'm becoming a fan of copper, though this thing weighs nearly a pound, WAY over AMD's specs. Still, I'll take it.
:)
hmm. That seems rather hot.
You might want to get artic silver 2 and a really heavy duty heatsink.
Make sure your case is getting a lot of air flow.
I picked up a swiftech 462a at
http://www.memoryexpress.net
and found it to be a rather good choice. Only thing is it is expensive.
my cpu is running at 1430 46c load, 38 idle.
Hi,
I´m running a 1.4 AYHJAR at default values with an PAL6035 and YS-Tech Power Fan (7.68 W ;) ), and my temperatures are not so well, but still ok. Case temp at 29°C (it´s summer :) ) and CPU under load at 52°C. System is stable, but I don´t want to overclock, before I have a better HS. The price of the MC462 is to high, a SK6 would be nice too, but I move my PC twice a week ... so I´m waiting for the PAL8045, maybe it´s a bit cheaper ...

One important aspect which has been left out thus far is the way you apply the Arctic Silver....If you put too much on, it actually insulates the CPU and can RAISE temps.....The best way to apply the paste is to use a credit card and get a film on the CPU which is as thin as possible while still covering ALL the cpu face ( you should not be able to see the core..... )
A great deal for heatsinks is the OCZ Gladiator with or without the Delta fan..It ranks in the top three ( many times first place in shootouts ) and is on sale at www.theoverclockerzstore.com for less than $20 ) I use this to cool my 1.33GHz chip and I can't believe how well it works.
Furthermore, if you are using the Asus A7 board......I remember there being some issues with the newer BIOS versions reporting the temps higher than usual.......you might want to look into it becuase there were some good tweaks to lower temps ( ie: BIOS tweaks that lowered 5-10 deg )
Good luck! :)

thanks for all the help guys.
thanks to my excellent engineering and technical skills, I have put together a wind tunnel using some toilet paper rolls and case fans. :D
I managed to lower the temp another 4c which was all I needed to stop it from crashing under full load after a while. I still wish it was lower, but oh well.

at 1.4 the TBird is pushing its aircooled max, if you want to break 1.5 with little hassle, go with an all copper sink. IF you are serious and willing to be meticulously careful and don't mind regularyl doing plumbing work around computers, then go with water, but do it correctly and carefully!!!
