alright i have a Asus P4S533, 1.6 p4 and some crap ram in my fathers system.
what i need to know is:

what temps do i want to stay under with a p4?
how far do you think i can push it?
and some tips for oc'ing a pentium

(amd user my self, fathers rig needs more power...)

is it like ocing my old p3 333? i got that little bugger to 900mhz gotta love ASC and super glue. it was a slot type. i glued a stock 2000+ amd cooler on it.

Which 1.6 is this? A Willamette or Northwood?

Looks like Willamette, not Northwood because it is .18 micron process.

here (http://processorfinder.intel.com/scripts/list.asp?ProcFam=483&NoNav=NO&CorSpd=4998&SysBusSpd=ALL&MfgTech=ALL&step=ALL&cache=ALL&PkgType=ALL&btnFOS=Filter+on+selections) is a link to information about your processor. It basically says the max operating temp is about 70-72C. People will have different opinions on what is a safe operating temp. I would say anything below 60. You can monitor this temperature using sensors built into your computer using a program like speedfan (http://www.almico.com/speedfan413.exe) which is my personal fav. Or motherboard monitor 5, lots of different ones... Try to see what kind of ram you have. There are utilities, but i don't know them off the top of my head.

i believe its a northwood because it runs 38ºC load temps.

northwoods start at 2.0GHz I believe. I didn't dig up anything good. just another forum post (http://64.233.161.104/search?q=cache:lYcy8asxvJ8J:forums.devhardware.com/showthread.php%3Fgoto%3Dlastpost%26t%3D21672+willa mette+overclocking&hl=en). It seems like they don't OC very high. I recommend leaving the cpu voltage where it is and increase the fsb maybe 3 at a time until it is unstable or does not boot. then trim back a couple. I couldn't find anything about people turning up the voltage, I'm sure one adjustment up might help you get a bigger OC, but only try that if you are satisfied with your cooling and operating temps. Good luck!

figured out what it is and what it can do.
its a 1.6a northwood
it should do 2.0+ w/ good cooling, 1.7-2.0 with stock cooler.

Run CPU-z. It will tell you. You can also look at the top of the chip and see if it says that it has "512" k cache then it's a Northwood. If it says 256 you have a Willie. I am sure you know that the Northwood is the famous overclocker that was king 2 years ago. If I threw caution to the wind voltage wise, I could get mine up to 2620 mhz. I wanted it not to die, so I throttled it back to 2400. Some folks got higher with their 1.6a's!

Good luck
