can anyone help me discover what i have broken in my pc here is the story

had bog standard cellie 600 on an MSI-6178 mobo(fsb 66) with intel 810 family chipset on board sound and graphics 130 mb board toshiba pc100 sd ram an a 64 board of nec pc100 sd ram(cas2)

I started out pin wrapping it to get my core voltage up from 1.45 t0 1.85v and then all i could get was up 1 notch to an fsb of 75 and cpu @678 then i find a jumper on mobo that gets me up to 100 fsb and it defaulted at 901mhz i was chuffed and duly headed out for a good bit cooling so i got a big thermalite chrome orb rated @ over a gig or 5500 rpm so i stuck it on with case open and it came on (the fan) but pc not boot changed back to old fan and it booted no probs straight into windoze so i put ORB back in abd pc dies i was then forced to format c then on reinstall on win98 se it took like 8 hours to install windoze and its slower than the slowest thing in the world like 20 mins to boot what have i broken PLEASE some one Tell me not everything as im hoping for just processor needing replaced basically when tou try to operate it its like about as responsive as a 5mhz processor would probably be THIS IS A FULL SOS:confused: as im sick

Ummm, so your saying when you put on the Orb it wouldnt work?

If so maybe it was touching something and shorting it out.

As for the slowness I'd take a look at the ram and do an inspection on the mobo for any scorch marks.

I'd like to help more but....

Good luck bro

the orb worked (ie fan was spinnining inside orb so i assume working) no scorches nothing touching etc etc just a heavy duty slowup infact its nearly going back the way!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Get another cooler. Orbs usually aren't very good, even if they're rated for over 1000 mhz. Something is probably shorting out. Orbs are wide and can easily touch electrical components without you knowing. Take the orb off, put back the retail fan, and hold off on overclocking 'til you get things back under control

My old orb didnt sit flat and needed the clip bend for good contact. If your orb aint on good it will heat up quick and not boot

Sorry, but I think the chrome orb is for AMD chips, you should be using a Golden orb on your celly. I have one that i lapped and it works fine on my 566 at 850. you may have to much tension or a short like was mentioned before.

Check for cut scratches and chunks out of the core. Lose the Orb and get a VolcanoIII if you don't feel like spending a lot of cash. I think I paied $9.99 for mine I had it on a 633 celeron and it would cool it fine no over heating problems what so ever. I'd much rather see people useing an SK-6 if they even think about going up to the 100mhzFSB though. My thoughts on your problem would go like this.

A: The orb is touching something.
B: Make sure in bios you don't have your drives in Pio mode 4 try useing auto. I craped up an install like that fragged my system so bad it hung itself trying to defrag.
C: Your Ram is crapping out.
D: Heat problem.
E: Your Celeron can't take the speed your throwing at it

I think you killed the cache. I disabled the cache on my Celeron II 700 ( when i had it awhile ago), and it took forever to come up.

The cache is on the die (what touches the heatsink) and i think the orb crushed it. But i don't understand how it still works. I have never seen a crushed core still work without cache.

Yep, get rid of the orb. I bought one just to try cause I had some extra money kicking around, and it was rather dissapointing. I lapped it and no change. Mind you, I think I over did it, and it now has a mirror like finish. But the results were the same. Right now I've got a OEM HSF on my Cel 800 (where the heck is my alpha?!?!?), and it's doing better than the orb. Stick with your stock HSF till you can get a good one. The onboard crap of your MB might be causing some problems as well. Try taking it up little by little and tell us what you get.
