Hi, i just got me my first AMD processor and i wanna overclock it, but i have a couple of questions about the multiplier unlock.

1) If i unlock my processor, what effects does this have? (apart from on the processor).

2) Is it best to use a lower multiplier then the normal setting or higher? i ask this because i have seen people say that a lower mulitpier allows higher FSB speeds.

Thanks in advance :D

By the way, i am using a Duron 850 on a gigabyte GA-7IXE4 motherboard. :)

Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

there shouldn't be any effect by unlocking the L1 bridges as long as you do it carefully. As far as running a lower multiplier this would essentially allow you to run a higher bus speed thereby giving you more bandwidth essentially.

The standard rule of thumb is: Lower multiplier, Higher FSB. The wider the bus, the better, because it alows more data to flow. Mind you, when you overclock w/ FSB, you're increasing the speed of EVERYTHING in your box. Most boards support a maximum divisor of 4, because the PCI bus likes to run at 33 Mhz. So w/ your default FSB of 133, you're dividing it by 4, so you get 33.25. Most things on the PCI bus don't mind being overclocked. Some exceptions to the rule are NIC's. They just don't like going very high over the 33 Mhz line. Highest you might be able to push your box would be about 140-141 w/o losing too much stability. But then again, every computer is different, and you might have different results from me.

Good Luck! :)
