i read an article in maximum pc about setting up a a pc to record tv shows, share music, host an ftp, etc. i was hoping to do something along those lines.
you can do any of those things with any OS from win2k on. i record tv and run an ftp off win2k pro. you only need a server OS if you want to run alot of pretty intense programs. what you seem to be wanting to do can be done with any home OS.
also sharing music is illegal and is not to be mentioned on these forums. please edit that part of your post.

actually, putting mp3s from cds i own on a server contained within my own home to share between my personal computers is not. i appreciate the advice but please let the mods do their jobs. if you're not a mod, dont try to be one.
If the 2003 server is the same 2003 server that MS has a free demo of on their site, then there are lots of people who can help you. Generally, 2K3 is regarded to be very stable, and not too bad an OS for server stuff. It's kinda limited in desktop use, but since you specifically stated this would be more of a server thing, it's probably good.
BTW, everybody here has the right to notify other members of the rules. While it is indeed the mods job to display and enforce the rules, it's everybody's job here to try to this place clean and in line. His comment about removing the file sharing portion was not off base from the language you used ("sharing music" in most cases means P2P), so thank you for the clarificaiton on what you really meant by it. :)
