I just picked up an used but working Tyan S2466 with manual, disk, box, etc. - all for $99 from a guy who just upgraded to an Opteron system. I am not going to push this system as I have my MSI K7D - I just want a solid, reliable dually to replace my old PIII 1Ghz backup PC.

- I want to have 1GB of memory (probably two 512 sticks, but would consider 4 256 sticks at the right price). What memory type works best with this motherboard, registered or un-registered? Any memory brands that I should stay away from?

- I do have a single 1700 Tbred B (DLT3C:JIUHB) that I can use while I get the "proper" chips for this motherboard, but what would be good and low cost pair of Athlon XP chips that I can use on this motherboard? Do I need to do the L5 modification on them for this motherboard? Can I still use the "wire-in-the-socket" method to set a multiplier?

- What heat-sinks fit this motherboard? What do you guys recommend?

- Any other tips/suggestions for this Tyan motherboard?

Thanks in advance :)

The wire in socket is the way to go but be sure to get older chips that are not super locked..Memory for it is best to stay with what Tyan has tested and recomends. And just grad another 1700 chip and do the MP mod to them..

thanks man - I will get another 1700 and get going :)

since I don't have voltage control for OCing like on the MSI board I have now, I imagine that with stock voltage (1.5 - 1.6 volts) I will need to stay in the 1.7-2.0 Ghz range, right? That would mean a multiplier of 14 or 15 - does this sound correct?

Notice, the S2466N without -4M doesn't have functional USB-Ports (SB Bug), so you need an extra card, if you need USB.
Furthermore, I wouldn't use Infineon RAMs, some people have problems with it (I use Transcend Registered RAM without any troubles on my S2466N-4M, 1GB costs about $100 on ebay.de).

I use Crucial in all of my Tyan Dual Athlon systems. Crucial isn't on Tyan's recommended list, but I've had no problems. Even though the 2466N (not the 4M) doesn't have working onboard USB, it does have FSB overclocking. None of the other Tyan Dual Athlons have that.

two slk 800a would fit perfect, also knigston ecc memory two 512 is going for 152 on ebay I just got my pair wednesday. 512 cause you can always upgrade instead of a 256mb cause its not worth it these days. A usb/firewire card is needed for devices. start out with the 14x multi then if its stable at a good temp try 15x but make sure its stable @14x good luck. as mine is not as good yet almost finshed my dual sometime after rent lol as im getting to the of my quest of building rigs

i would sell the 1700 and grad a couple of mobile 2400's...

but in either case, you can pin mod the socket for more cpu voltage...and of course, change the multiplier with that method as well...

i have read about some of the Tyan boards having trouble when too much cpu power is required...and there is a 5v mod for that...i'm not sure if this is the model with the problem..

I've had no problems yet with any of my Tyans with Mobile XP2400.
My O/C is small, I pin mod to 16x to give me MP2800 speed
So far no additional voltage is needed and so far 100% stable
I may try a 2469 @ 17x just to test it for stability.
