Version 3.19 of the BOINC core client for Windows is released. Please upgrade.

June 22, 2004
Welcome to the new SETI@home! The project is now officially active. We've reset the project by deleting all results and workunits, and setting all credits (user, team, host) to zero.

Our database server crashed yesterday, and it's taken a while for the database to repair itself. Some message-board postings and user profiles may have been lost.

So, Berkeley says its OK.

Would anyone thats participated in BOINC already have any comments about it really being ready or not?

Swapping computers at various locations to BOINC is gonna take some time and I'd like to only have to do it once. I'll probably swap my home PC over after work, and proceed with the others depending how that trial goes.

Thanks, Mike
Sigh...only ~1350 away from 10,000, but I did hit the 99.5% :)

Not ready imho, but whatever. The latest version is much improved, but still not operating perfectly. I can't get my HT machines to work on more than one client at a time, regardless of what my preferences are set to. The latest client still doesn't work on my mac G5 - crashes immediately. It's going to be a bumpy road, but we'll make it.

My rig works fine on 2 units at a time. But the Wus are bit strange some can be done to 50% in less than 20 minutes then it will finish the rest in 4 hours.

I haven't been able to tell much difference between any of the BOINC clients lately (..as long as the debugging code was removed that is), so I'd say it's pretty good. The site is looking better and better, so I'd say it's probably ready for general consumption.

Only real issue I have (other than a graphics draw bug I need to report :D) is that they took their snapshot of SAH1 user data quite some time ago. According to it, I completed 11481 WUs, but currently have 12838 in to the server. Oh well.... Better get a screenie of it so I have proof of my acutal achievement.

I read about this on the setiathome site early this morning. I didn't think BOINK was going to get the green light for some time yet...

BTW, does anyone know when are they going to pull the plug on phase one?

It is not only your problem, their Boinc database is not up to date with the S@H one, same problem for everyone.

Once SETI@home/BOINC is running smoothly and versions are available for most platforms, we will turn off the data server for SETI@home Classic. At this point you will need to switch to SETI@home/BOINC.

How do you upgrade from one to the other? I supposed that an e-mail with the account info would be sent to current SETI users but I haven't received yet, and I have tried with the BOINC site and my e-mail address is not accepted.

If you participated in the original 'SETI@home Classic' project:
We've transferred your account, including profile and team information.
You must now activate the account.

Are you sure you entered the same email address you supplied for your classic account? It worked for me a couple of weeks ago.

have you, changed something like E-mail or something, since

On 14 May 2004 we made a 'snapshot' of SETI@home Classic user information (accounts, teams, profiles) and used it to initialize the new SETI@home database.

Well so far BOINC is working OK on my easily accesible PCs. I like how I can go online and check out the individual computers I have running it. Also the 3 choices(home, school, work) of how to set it up are a good feature.

Only thing I found was when I woke up it had several WUs not sent back.

I'm wondering if it just waits to send them all back when everything is downloaded or what. I just clicked update to have it send them automatically, but before deploying BOINC to the offsite computers, I'd like to know that it'll automatically upload the WUs at some point.

read somewhere that they have a server "restart" somewhere......hmmm no links

If you do nothing with the client it will automatically contact the "Scheduling Computer" when it needs to refill it's cache and at that time all those WUs marked as "ready to report" will be reported. The downside to that is if you run a fairly large cache it may be days till your completed WUs get reported which makes the entire credit awarding system drag out over even a longer time period.

Just to clarify for everybody, sending completed WUs back to Berkeley is a 2 step process. As soon as the client finishes crunching the WU it immediately sends the data back to Berkeley, however that data is not recognized and validated until the Scheduling Server is notified that the WU has been completed and returned. This second step is as I have described above automated if one waits till the clients cache is emptied, or can be done manually by occasionally going to the "Projects" tab and right clicking on the project and then clicking "Update".

Hope that helps
SkyHook

Addendum:
The info above is relevant to the WINDOWS platform. The Linux command-line client now has a switch which when used, automatically reports the WU to the Scheduling Server upon uploading it to Berkeley

SunRedRX7

Thanks Skyhook, I'll probably turn down the cache then on my "school" machines since there only on for about 8hrs a day anyway.

Wow, BOINC is getting slammed...

June 24, 2004
To handle increased demand for more workunits, we are bringing another splitter online as quickly as possible. We are also working on increasing overall system performance. The overall system is experiencing twice the maximum load beta generated and is climbing. We are working to resolve the issues as quickly as possible.

My computer is having serious issues getting work from them, and so it's gone off and requested Beta WUs instead. Thankfully the beta is still going (it's being run side by side with the public release to test new vesions, etc), so the work I'm doing is actually useful :D

I can tell they're under load now. All of my clients are reporting "No work from project Deferring connection for xxx" BTW to expand a little on what Ron was saying about getting the credit process rolling faster - if you run the linux command line client you can start it with the "-return_results_immediately" option and this appears to do just that. There is as of yet no such option in the windows gui that I am aware of. There you have to right-click on seti@home under the project tab, and select "update(retry now)" and it will contact the server and report your completed units. There appears to be a file in one of the gui install directories that looks like a windows command line client, and even shows you a list of options if you execute it with the -help option, but so far we have been unable to get it to perform correctly. I suppose it's not ready yet, or perhaps we're not using it correctly. SkyHook read somewhere that it can be used to install the program as a system service, but he'll have to fill in the details about that.

Yes, I have not been able to connect for a day to get any work.

I keep getting "no work available", the message you are getting, or "temporarily down for maintenance".

I wish they would hurry up and fix it :(

Has anyone managed to compile a working Windows CLI BONIC client yet?

Has anyone managed to compile a working Windows CLI BONIC client yet?

Not sure if this is what you are looking for, and it is not optimized for any specific processor or chipset, but if you look in the folder where you installed BOINC to you should find a file called "boinc_cli.exe". There has been mixed reports about the success and failure of being able to get it running properly, however if you open a terminal window and "cd" into your BOINC Folder then type "boinc_cli -help" without the quotes it will display a list of the switches that can be attached to the command. One very handy one is:
"-return_results_immediately" which automatically contacts the Scheduler after a completed WU is uploaded so that the entire 2 step upload process is automated. There is also an "-install" switch which supposedly sets it up to run as a service, HOWEVER!! this has been an area where most complaints have come from because at present when run as a service it writes all of it's messages to Windows Event Log which apparently gets cranky with the volume of stuff that it writes there.

My best advice is do what you feel comfortable experimenting with and use at your own risk right now. Also some Beta Testers claimed to have compared performance between the BOINC GUI and the command-line client and saw no measurable difference in the performance, unlike SETI Classic where the command-line was many times faster than the screensaver.

Hope that helps

I haven't tried using the -install switch on the CLI yet, just used the standard instsrv.exe and svchost.exe procedure and it worked fine. It's a bit harder than just using the built in switch, but it should stop the event viewer from filling up.

I'm in the same boat. I try to activate, but their activation e-mail never arrives at my inbox (not in spamfilter either). It just doesn't arrive, and I've requisitioned at least 10 over the last 72 hour period.

I hope they didn't loose my account

They're slammed right now - I wouldn't worry about it, and I wouldn't bother trying for several days, maybe a week.

I don't think they were expecting that much demand. They just need time to ajust. Besides, seti1 is still active...
