Many people have asked for the details on how to do this, I am not that good with explaining stuff I do, but this should help. This hack changes a part of the registry to cool your CPU by 5-10c. It enables the halt command on the CPU. The hack can also enable video settings and memory setting that are otherwise not available to you in your BIOS. I had to do this all over cause the new forum did not transfer my pics, but no biggie, if it helps one person it is worth it.
Step 1:
get the sotware here
http://www.h-oda.com
You will need WPCREDIT and WPCRSET and the .PCR file for your chipset. Most VIA chipsets need the .PCR file labeled 11060391

Step 2:
Once you have both programs loaded open WPCREDIT and go to the top were it says file and choose open .PCR file

step 2:
choose the highlighted .PCR file

Step 3:
click on the file to choose it and this will come up, when this does, click Yes, it is OK. Program flaw.

Step 4:
the yellow dot denotes the line that deals with cooling, mainly 52
the blue dot denotes the line that deals with Video mods, like fastwrites, sidebanding and so on.
the white dot denotes the line that deals with memory, like 4-way interleave, cas settings and so on.
the red dots show what you enter in wpcrset, to do this hit the edit button on the right and choose the settings that are on this pic. Paint by numbers man!!

step 5:
Now to make these changes load on start-up you will need to use WPCRSET. This is what WPCRSET looks like when you open it for the first time.

Step 6:
Do as the picture says

Step 7:
After you click add on WPCRSET you will see this
TranceBear
08-19-01, 10:06 PM
Step 8:
the highlihted boxes are the only ones you will change
TranceBear

Step 9:
The register box corresponds to the hex box on WPCREDIT, these should be the same between the 2 programs.
The data box is the same as the data box on WPCREDIT

Step 10:
finished mod, it should look like this when you are all done. now if you change another part of your registry, you will of course have different values for each box. The best way is to play with it and see what happens, the changes are not permanent until you use WPCRSET. Good Luck!!

hmmm bit of a problem here.
On the line with the yellow dot, in your screenshot where it says 17 A3 EB B4 and so on..
I can't get it to change to A3. It always gets stuck at A4. And at the end of that first set where you have 10 10, mine doesn't change from 08 08. I've got a KT7A (non-raid) Kt133 chipset, downloaded the right file off of that site. Did I miss something somewhere?

The only line you need to change is 52. Change it to EB and that is it for this program and then use WPCRSET to set it.

any side affects to this? or bad things?
btw: how did you come up with this? how do you know how this? Is there a way I can learn to think this up on my own?
We tried installing on a friend last night, he's got an asus with kt133a and everytime we tried to set it would lock his machine. Although another friend has the identical board and it works fine for him. Works good for me too, go figure.

Sometimes "EB" @ "52" might not work so I suggest trying "EC" as a alternative. Just wanted to share that along with the fine explanation Trancebear gave.

In my experience doing it. 1 of 2 things happens it either works or it does not. If it crashes your machine then perhaps there is anothe conflict on the bios version does not like it When messing with the BIOS registers in any fashion caution needs to taken always.

I found this hack on a website a couple months ago in a desire to cool my very hot CPU down. I have spent MANY hours doing the research to know absolutly everything there is to know about my setup and all the tweaks I can do. Infact just today I lowered my temps yet another 1c by doing some more reg hacks and improved my framerate in Quake 3 with a freeware program. It just takes time to learn all that is out there. I do thank H-Oda for this program and WCPUID. These are 2 very valuable programs nobody should be without.

1. Do you have any more generic ways to reduce the temp in any way using the registry??? Or any other way besides manually adding fans and hardware wise?
2.where do I Get WPCRSET? It's not supported for download at that site
ps.. can you explain why this wirks? I mean what does this do that makes the cpu 10C cooler?

The *.pcr file that you need for a KT133(A) board is 11060305.pcr
I believe you can download it from http://www.viahardware.com. You can download both Wpcredit and Wpcrset from here also. The name of the file is kt133.zip, which contains the correct *.pcr.
It might also be available from http://www.h-oda.com
In Wpcredit, it should show up like this...
Vendor ID : 1106 VIA VT8363 (KT133)
Device ID : 0305 Host to PCI Bridge
Revision : 03

where is the best site to find tweaking programs and the best programs for o/c. I'm sure there is 1 really good site for cooling tweaks, any1 know it?

can you give me names of some of the temp savers???
im lost....just wondering if anyone can explain how a software registry thing can help you cpu temps in a language a 15 year old can understand.

ThanX Trancebear for the info.....

Can some1 plz list all the programs/software that tweaks SOMTHING to do with LOWERING TEMPS? I would be very grateful and I'm sure many others would too. If you know of any essential o/c-help software, don't hesitate to name those too.
Thanks a lot guys.

I started my overclocking journey at this site and have since went to www.hardoc.com , www.athlonoc.com , www.tweaktown.com , and many others that I cannot remember, but those are a good start. If you are like me and want to learn on your own, just take the time to do the research and do not jump the gun and ruin your equipment.
How do I find out which .PCR file I need for my 8k7a , I really would like to mess with this but I dont want to ruin my new setup.
I know its a AMD761 based board , so is this hack limited to the VIA chipsets or what.

There was somebody who posted to the old thread that had an AMD chipset, but I do not know what .pcr file, I try to know everything, but not always. Can somebody help him/her?
Him
I just dowloaded CPUcooler and it works great but if someone does find the .pcr file I would still like to know. I'd like to see if it works as well as the cooler I got now the best part about the hack is its FREE.

I don't know that there's a *.pcr file available for the AMD761 chipset, although like setting register 52 to EB for a KT133(A) based board, the register hack for a 8K7A is setting register 62 to B7 (default is B3).
You can perform this hack by only using WPCRSET, you don't need WPCREDIT (unless you want to see exactly what you're changing, as far as bit values). If after changing the value via WPCRSET and rebooting, your PC locks up...just go into safe mode, open WPCRSET and change from "Start" to "Stop"...or just delete the B7 entry altogether.
Train, abit usually enables this hack in their BIOS' before they ship their boards. All their newer boards have it, with the exception of the KT7A. The KT7A used to have it but Abit decided to remove it cause it was crashing the KT133A chipset.
Watch your temps. If they jump 10 degrees when you start using the system, it's in there. If they only jump 2 or 3, it's not.
