Is there a way to speed up the low level format (write zeros to drive) on maxtor HDs? I formated a 80gb hd about 3 months ago and it took about 6 hours to complete. This time, I have 2 160gb maxtor drives that I need to format. I'm doing this type of format to eliminate the virus' and existing information (personal and financial). Plus, whenever I do this with my WD drives it appears to speed them up substantially when writing and reading data.
I used the powermax software before but I didn't like it because of the time it took to complete. So does anyone know of any other type of software to preform the task in under two hours? 80gb WD drives can be low level formatted in about 40 minutes with their software, so I'm hoping to duplicate the format speed ratio with these maxtor drives.
I've done a google search and found a program called MAXLLF.exe, which is an old low level formatting tool. I'm not exactly sure if it still works with these larger drives, but if anyone has used them recently on large drives tell me how it worked out.
