I bought a 1.4GHz TBIRD. I thought all TBIRDS 1.2G and up were unlocked. The multiplier option in the BIOS is greye out. All i can adjust is the FSB. I have everything on jumperfree mode. Please Help!

Very odd. All current 1200 and up TBirds should be factory unlocked. You can check this by looking at the L1 bridges on the die, they should all been connected/closed vertically. Maybe your motherboard (BIOS) does not support multiplier overclocking. Check the motherboard manufacturer's website for BIOS updates. Which motherboard do you have? Good luck!

1.1 and lower are locked. Some 1.2 are locked, some 1.2 are unlocked. 1.33 and higher are unlocked.

If you have a 1.4 Thunderbird, it's unlocked. Maybe your mobo doesn't support multiplier adjustments. Usually the mobo can't tell if it's locked or not so it wouldn't grey out anything. It would let you change the multiplier in the BIOS but wouldn't take effect at post time.

I heard a nasty rumor that AMD made an agreement with Asus that to use the AMD 760 chipset on the A7M266 Asus must not allow the multiplier to be adjusted. Sounds kinda silly to me since the KG7 uses that chipset and the multiplier can be adjusted. Again, it's just a rumor... i have no way of knowing for sure as I have never even seen your mobo let alone used and inspected one. :) Maybe your mobo sets multipliers with dip switches or jumpers instead of bios?

Nice choice on all the parts you bought, Train. :) Was hoping you would get the KG7. I may upgrade to one soon. Let us know how you like it. I got my AYHJA Y 1.4 on Thursday but I'm waiting for the Swiftech heatsink to get here before I put it in. :)

you must get ur processor and carefully connect the L1 bridge, there are 4 bridges around the cpu core, find the L1 which isn't conncected, it is like this:
::::

you must connect the lines to make it look like this
||||

Make sure you take care and not cross any so you don't fry your processor. Good Luck

oh yeah... you do this with a #2 pencil or ir you want it to be perminent find a conductive pen, micro tip @ a "Do it yourself electroincs" store, sometimes found in radio shack too, I never found it there. A pencil will work jsut fine but as I said earlier, it may rub off and you may be forced but to your default clock mult.

Good lock, lol

The A7M266 doesn't support changing the multiplier, that's why the option is greyed out. Asus made a deal with AMD to not allow that function. The only way to Adjust it is to mod the board which requres one to replac certain resistors and add a set of dipswithes. Another option is to get a "golden socket" which allows you to change the multipler. You can buy one of these at www.plycon.com
Last time I checked they were out of stock and waiting for the latest shipment to clear customs. I'm planning to get one, hopefully it works as advertized.

i guess that i won't be able to do much ocing with the AMD retail HSF. Is it still possible for me to take the HSF off? I used the thermal pad. I've heard it sticks to the core and doesn't let go.

I think I will just bump up the FSB. Even if I unlock it, i can't do it because of my mobo right?

Even if you weren't going to OC I'd get rid of that stock HS, it's more or less worthless even at stock speeds. Just use some lighter fluid on a lint free cloth or some rubbing alcohol on a lint free cloth to get all teh residue off the core.
Your chip is most likely unlocked, the A7M greys the multiplier out whether it is locked or not. If you really want to change the multipler check out the golden socket and www.plycon.com

I have an A7m too, it's a great board, but the multiplier thing really stinks, I feel your pain.

Are you sure your A7M266 can change multipliers? Most cannot without a mod.

Who? Me or him?
Neither of us can change the multipliers on our boards, that's what we're talking about. At least I think that's what we're talking about?

Your trying to confuse me aren't you...well knock it off cuz it'll probably work =]

If no one comes up with an hack then!

So for now the only way will be fsb oc, sorry

I doubt there will be a hack since people who want that chipset and want multiplier adjustments will buy the KG7. More stable and more reliable with RAID and SoftMenu III. :) The only downside is it's a lot more expensive. :rolleyes:
