View Full Version : new cruncher help
Ok I have been out of the computer world for a while and want to build a new cruncher i am tired of 9 wu a day. i want to add about 15-20 more.
So what should I look at? intel or amd?
Gary
From what i have read on the forums & my own experience intel with a HT enabled chip, if you can cool it well a presscot is very good. I have a 2.8e@3.1 doing an average of 18 wu a day.
ok what are the different versions of the P4 i see a different letter with the speed what do they all mean?
Gary
Newegg sells a retail 2.8E refurb for $149.00

They are out of stock right now but have been available for the last 3 weeks.
I got a refurb OEM 2.8E there for $144. and it works great. With HyperThreading and halfway decent PC3200 you will get at least 16 wu's a day. I'm trying for 24 wu's in the next 24 hours as I loaded it up with 1.00AR and above wu's.
Newegg does have the 3.0E refurb in stock for $174.

Hyperthreading is the way to go.

edit: I think this is the memory I'm using. Infineon chips.

Ran 2.5-3-3-6 @ 219MHz
now running 3-4-4-8 @ 234MHz.

All the Prescotts have 1mb cache. Northwoods 512k.
Not sure of the letters but 800MHz FSB seems to be the Hyperthreading variety for both.
ok here is the challenge i will have about a 1000 to spend build a system or two that will do atleast 15 wu a day(or what ever bionc does)
does not have to have a big hard drive since i will not be using it for anything but crunching. no case i guess just MB,CPU,RAM,HD,PS,Vidio

Here is a Buy it Now on eBay for Asus P4C800-E Deluxe for $139.99 plus $14.00 s&h.

It's a great board. I think anyone who has one will agree.
So that leaves $844.01 left.
edit:
Seller has more than one. Buy it Now is gone for this auction

But if you plan to build two, seller might have more.
edit:
The first auction is for a P4C800 Deluxe. The last is for P4C800-E Deluxe.
Don't know what the difference is but with the Prescott I would suspect the latest board would be more capable of handling it.
Just to expand - C is 800FSB with HT, B is 533FSB without HT, E is prescott with 1MB cache 800FSB and HT. There is also an A prescott without HT but still having the 1MB cache - not to be confused with the much older A chips with 400FSB no HT. Prescotts work a little better mainly due to the extra cache, and the HT has been tweaked. You can still do very well with an overclocked C chip. Many 2.4C's will do 3.3-3.4 with good cooling and good ram will let you run a 1:1 ratio.

I think you can list P4 as this:
P4A - 400 mhz
P4b - 533 mhz only 3.06 ghz support HT (the first chip with HT)
P4c - 800 mhz all have HT
P4e - 800 mhz Prescott core (1 MB)
have I left any out???
24 hours Prescott Hyper Threading
sweetness, im very impressed by the 2.8e, nevermind all the presshot jokes. just needs some love :P
