Hi all.
I'm new to all this lark, and am after some advice!

This is the current situation:
Abit BE6-II mobo
Intel P3 600
320 MB RAM
ATI Radeon VIVO 64MB 163MHz (o/ced to 183MHz)
Tower case

The problem I have is that I want to o/c the processor but at the moment according to the temp gauge it is hot (65C+) and i have just ordered a new 40gig HDD to go with the other HDDs i already have, so am rather concerned that heat will be a big prob! (i'm having to leave the case off the system and had to up the temp warning level as it was setting off quite a bit)

Can anyone advise as to what I need to buy to cool my system down? (bearing in mind that noise is also a factor!)

Also, what sort of speed I should be able to O/C the processor?

AHA

Cheers

I there a fan on the heatsink and if so is it working?
Iif you put a alpha 3214s heatsink on it you would be good for overclocking.

Check the cpu database from the main page of www.overclockers.com to see what others get overclocking with the same cpu.

Hi SaintM, wellcome to the Forum,
you need of a good cooler for your chip, an Alpha P3125 (the best) or a Globalwin vos32 (really good and cheaper) and a thin layer of thermal paste.
With a P/// 650 slot1 I've gained a nice 866Mhz rising the Fsb from 100Mhz to 133 without any voltage increase and with a temps @full load (100% load) of 47-48 degree C.

I hope it helps you ;)

Heat is the enemy. Cooling is your friend. For the extra mhz you will need to invest a few bucks like the prior posts have already suggested.

Welcome to the forums, and be sure to check the CPU database and hang around for a while... feel free to ask questions, we're here to hang and help.

Thanks a lot guys, a great help and very welcoming :)

I've ordered a Globalwin VNS04 heatsink/fans thingy and a tube of Arctic Silver Compound II.

Now the only thing I need to figure out is how to remove the sink/fan that came with the P3.. *scratches head*

*unscratches head*

Found loadsa guides on how to do it :)

It's amazing what google can do isn't it?

I'm still trying to figure out why your unclocked system is running so high it should be no where near those temps you reported, you may also consider a few case fans 1 blowing cool air in the other hot air out. some other cooling mods are adding a small HSF to your northbridge and rounding your cables for improved airflow. if you get the time go through the tips section and a get some good ideas i still go back to them for help.

I'm confused too as to why it is running so hot..

I have the case open, and have popped in a cheapy 2 fan PCI card to try and help the heat problem, but the sensor is still saying 66C+.

Either something is wrong with my heat sink, or the sensor is knackered I think (no factual basis to think this, just plenty of assumption :) ).

Either way, hopefully I will see a huge improvement with the temps once I get the new hs/fan, if not then i guess i'll be trying even more stuff!

Cheers

Just as a follow up..

I changed the generic Intel hs with a Globalwin VNS04 and used artic silver 2 and the temp is now down to 55ish..

That is obviously an improvement.. next im gonna try to reseat the HS again (didnt clean the core properly the 1st time) and sort out some of the cables i have all over the place.

Thanks for the help guys

You're wellcome :)
Try to monitor your temps with MotherBoardMonitor, is a must that you can found at http://mbm.livewiredev.com/ and happy OC!
