View Full Version : Disappointed by Computer Show this weekend.....
Went to the computer show this weekend in search of a 1.4Tbird as well as to look around for any interesting steppings. How disappointing. Nothing unusual in steppings. Saw a ton of 1 Gig AXIARs, that's about it for new stuff. I was hoping to locate a 1.4 Gig AYHJAR Y. All that was avialable was AYHJA. Prices were terrible. One guy had 1.4 Gig T-birds for $184! When I asked him to look at the chips he demanded to know why. When I told him I was looking for a particular stepping his reply was "Stepping?". Needless to say I just walked off. One guy actually new what I meant by stepping and said that he had only see one or two AYHJAR chips come through his shop. Most vendors had prices more in line but nothing as good as pricewatch and they wouldn't deal at all. The lowest price I saw for the 1.4 was $129.
I'm through with computer shows. There were only about 10 vendors there, they were late opening, prices were not worth the entry fee of $5, and most only had junk (old 486s and such). What a joke.
Ok I'm through ranting now. I feel better as I just ordered my 1.4 from ICOMPZ.COM for $122 shipped. He garaunteed an AYHJA, so maybe I'll get lucky and it'll be an AYHJAR. I'll post a follow up when I get the chip.

I've never trusted computer shows.. never will. I know the types of vendors that show up for them. More often than not it's not someone I would normally deal with elsewhere.
It's been a couple of years since I've been to a computer show. I'm lucky enough to have a pretty good shop down the street that has reasonable prices. Years ago when I used to go the computer show would be packed and tons of good deals. Maybe those days are long gone.
Computer Shows in remoter areas tend to be small and expensive due to lack of competition. I live in Central NJ. If I go to Newark it's cheap and you can find lots of good stuff. If I go to Lakewood (South Joisey) it's as you describe - few vendors limited stock limited competition limited everything - no fun. In that case one is better better off ordering from the web, unless it's a bulky item (e.g. case).

Go ahead and rant all you want. The computer shows/swap meets of today, are not like they use to be. A lot of vendors are using the shows to move slow moving items and overstock items, and targeting the computer illiterate's on regular stock. These shows are big money makers for some of them - considering their overhead is very minimal.
Shopping via pricewatch is a much better idea.

I was quite suprised with Nashville, TN being the capital of the state and by no means remote. I could understand if I lived in the boonies though LOL.
Computer show I went to in Reseda about a month ago rocked. This was before the big price drops, but I got really good deals for the time. They were all ready to deal with me and gave me prices on most of the smaller items I picked up...they weren't to thrilled about dropping prices on expensive items, though.
Overall I figure I saved roughly 20% over shopping online.
