Thursday morning at work I fell about 8' landing on a 4" dia anchorbolt with my heel, which shattered the heel bone into several pieces. I'll be in a cast for 8 weeks min and then several weeks of rehab. Needless to say my money is going to get stretched real thin so in the near future I'll be selling my farm and only folding on 2 computers in the house. Hopefully I can stay on the first page during this bad time. The podiatreist (sp) gave me some good pain meds to help me out and they work real good. Its some sort of morphine  He also said he doubts I will be able to return to line of work. Thats a real bummer. I have 26 yrs invested in this trade and need 5 more to qualify for a full pension.Yea I can get a disability pension but it is only 60% of what I could get if I work for 5 more yrs. I sure hope that doc was/is wrong. As for workmans comp I may qualify for a maritime/longshoremans claim. If I can get that I'll be fine financially. Maritime claims pay 2/3 of your gross earnings from the last 12 months. That woulde be more then a thousand dollars aweek tax free. If I end up with Ca state compinsation its more like 550 per week. I'll know in aouple of days what they are going to pay me and if its the state comp I'm fighting for the maritime comp.
Well this post got a bit long winded huh. I just thought you guys would like to know about my rotten luck.

Glad you are ok, from that high, you could have easily killed yourself. Hope you can return to work and the doc is wrong.

Get better soon man. There are alot of braces out there that you could probably get to help you out. I'm not sure what you do exactaly but with a brace maybe you could make those last 5 years! If you need any information my friend makes prostetic (hope thats spelled right) limbs and braces. He does lots of custom work. I'd be happy to ask him any questions you might have.
good luck..... enjoy the meds

Get well soon Tismedt. I had a friend who broke an ankle in 3 places one night grappling with a friend in our karate class, caught it on the mat and it stuck. He had 2 plates and 4 screws in it and was out of work for 6 months, the doctor told him he would never be able to resume what he did before as well. He really toughed it out and overcame the odds, and is back working at his old job again. The time that he was laid up was rough as money was stretched thin, but in the end, all was well. I hope the same for you :)

10 years ago I had almost every bone in my left foot and all the bones in my ankle broke along with 3 breaks in my left leg and lots of tendon and ligament damage from a motorcycle wreck. My foot was actually pointing the wrong direction when the paremedics got there. All I remember is one of the fireman talking about how deformed my foot was. The doctors said I would never have full movement of my ankle, I would be lucky with 10%. That meant I would not be able to ride, I said B/S and as soon as the surgery's were done and the casts were off I started working on rehabing that bad boy. After a year of working at it I was able to get back to riding. I now have a few extra peices of metal in me but I have almost 90% of movement in that ankle. I worked for doctors for years and still work in the medical industry and have found very few doctors that I like, so I say prove them all wrong!! Good luck!

thanks for all the comments and engouragement guys. I found out today the co i worked for filed a maritime compinsation claim so i'll get the grand a week. Thats still less then I was making but its a whole lot better then the 500 the state would've givin me. whheeewww thats a load off of my mind. i've been researching shattered heel injuries and for someone my age (44) it does not look good. Arthiritis will setin very quickly and the heel will never be 100% healed. I work as a high steel Ironworker and the job involves a lot of climbing so I'm going to plan on getting into another carreer but work real hard to try to get well enough to stay working iron. I'll get paid vocational rehab so I'm thinking about the IT field. What do you guys think is the best field to get into these days?
Thanks again for all the encouragement and if you want swich a machine or two over to my name by all means go right ahead.:D

To make a LONG story short, my dad got in a wreck in a carpet van, ended up with a van motor in his lap and LOTS of carpet tools hit him. He had more broken bones than you could count with your fingers and toes. DR said he would never walk again. As of right now, he can lay carpet again, even though they put soo much steel in him that he sets off any metal detector.
So don't always believe doctors and get better soon!
