Hey I currently have a few computers. My first oc was a 2500 barton oced to a 3200 barton, now Im bored and want something to do so Im breaking out my old p3 512 ram :burn: First I woud like to ask if the old p3s have a temp monitor and if so what progam I can use to monitor it. I am using Asus probe on my XP 2500 but my Mobo on the p3 is not an asus and it is running RH9, however if no one has any suggestions for that I can swap it out wiht a HD running xp. Also I would like to know what reasonable expectations I could have? could I possibly hit 750mhz? My cooling right now is um...non-existant lol so the proccesor only has a heatsink and does not even have a fan on it and I do not have any case fans but I have a few extra 80mm that i can put in the case. Also does anyone have suggestions on how to view key sys info on a linux box? For example proccesor model exactly, ram type (i think its 4 sticks of 128 running 133 mhz) also like to know like general sys info (soundcard video card etc.) Any suggestions would be greatly apreciated and Im really bored so Ill be watching my post :D

Only "coppermine" and "tualatin" P3's can be counted on to reach 750. A reasonable expectation for yours would fall between 525-625 IMO.

Well if you got a good socket Coppermine it'll do up to 800 in some cases. I think the socket coppermines started at 550. Tualatins start at 900Mhz in the mobile form. I got a dual 550 Server at 600 so it'll do at least 600.

edit: GAH I got that idea from the THREAD TITLE! misreading is CONTAGIOUS
boy did I misread. ultrashawn never told us which kind of P3 he had. I don't know where I got the idea it was a P3-500 and therefore was not a coppermine. (edit: my slot1-centricity of the time got the best of me. there was an FCPGA 500MHz coppermine.) I think we can assume it ain't no tualatin.
shawn, the easy way would be for you to tell us how much cache is indicated in the BIOS display or setup screens. If it's 256k cache, that CPU may very well overclock to 750 MHz. If it's 512, certainly not (unless that CPU is still worth almost $150 US, which I doubt).
I have a coppermine P3 500MHz too, wich I have overclocked slightly...
I simply put in 133MHz RAM sticks and set the fsb to 133MHz instead of 100, leaving the multi at 5.0
ATM its running @ 667MHz...
My temps aren't too bad considering I really didn't do anything to the cooling of this case and cpu.
I reccommend modding your heatsink and making your own! :)
The plans I have is taking an old SECC2 HS (even worse than my current one) to the workshop and simply cutting off all the fins, finishing off the upperside until its nice and equal, then simply using an adhesive+thermal paste to stick some newer CPU heatsinks on it. (forgot the name, its big with very thin copper fins, 67 to be precise and uses heatpipes too, made for 80MM fans)
I have no results yet, because I'm yet to start the HS-mod, but I forsee a promising result! :)
My objective: hitting the 800MHz...

well when I swap my p3 800 in my current rig to my parents rig I will see what I can do with that p3 500. Hopefully I will 700 using the current system in my sig with the 500.

Circuit, why do you keep thread crapping and spamming? I've notice you do that in threads you have absolutly no answer for.

Wow considering the absolute fastest anyone ever got on p3 was still under 2ghz then you must have some special mobo and a handpicked totally unlocked chip. Since if it was locked you would need 1ghz bus speed to hit 5ghz.
Since I think I really really went for I could hit 1150mhz on my p3 800 with the at the time high multi of 8 I don't think any 500mhz cpu is going to hit your expected numbers, But if I see I will believe it.

Almost all P3 500's are based on the katmai core which will not overclock very much at all. I had a P3 600 based on the coppermine core which did 900mhz with stock cooling and voltage! Really loved those chips...
The easiest way for you to know which one it is would be checking the amount of cahce it has. The katmai has 512kb and the coppermine has 256kb.
