Just curious as to how everyone names their computers.
Do you have a theme? I name all my comps after trees on my home net (willow, spruce, oak, etc) and at work I name them after Italian cities using the Italian spelling (roma = rome etc)

I usually name my pc after myself, and others as descriptive as possible. ( ie- K62 or downstairs) Never really thought about being creative with them though, I'll have to try it some time.

I try to give be creative with the names of my computer depending on what I have in them or what I do. My old Athlon box on air was called Fire for obvious reasons while my old WCed P4 box was called Ice. Currently my main box is called Power and my laptop is called Mobility.

nin, neworder, curve, orbital, band names are easier to remember. At work i see a lot of interesting naming themes. Such as a LOTR name server farm, a fish name server farm, and a vegetable name server farm...

Mine is called "mine" my wife's is called "hers", the computer upstairs is called "theirs" and my laptop is called "that". The network is built and maintained from my perspective so it all works out.

Goddess - My computer [the one everybody drools over ;)]
Footnduji - Family computer [a concatenation of parents' nicnames]
Retardo - Younger sister's Pentium 1 [rather appropriate given it's speed I think...]
Sakana - Older sister's laptop ["Sakana" is japanese for "fish", by which we usually refer to the comp]

This thread made be get to thinking, I could be more creative with my names. So. . I just renamed the 5 computers on my network to the 5 allied landing beaches on D-Day: Omaha, Utah, Sword, Gold, and Juno. :D

mine are named by using initials and numbers. all of my boxes are mbb1, mbb2, mbb3. then my dad has wgb1. however, i did break this trend by calling my server "server", but that only makes sense to me :)

SniperXX
07-06-04, 07:48 PM
Well my theme just kinda evolved over time lol. First my brother and I just used our nicknames we use for gaming and online like my SniperXX. Then my friend and I started X-Treme PC TECH and we call the site XPC TECH for short. So then my friend and I switched our comps to xpc-___. Like mine went from SniperXX to XPC-SniperXX.

So my systems are:
XPC-SniperXX (mine)
XPC-Paintball (my bros nickname was Paintball KraZy but was too long)
XPC-Dell-P4 (Dad's comp, game server for lan parties cuz sucky graphics but fast specs)
XPC-PIII-Server (P3 Server)

And any new systems just follow the XPC-____, blank usually is the cpu name and speed (ex. PIII-500, VIA-800) or the users nickname (ex. SniperXX).

I know my way may not be the most interesting but I kept it to the KISS theory. :)

At one time my Windows 2000 Advanced Server was called Pandoras Box but that system is currently offline, mobo failure. :(

"My Computer"

That's what I call it, anyway. I could call it MC.

Wait a second...if I got an A64...would it be "MC Clawhammer?"

*Edit* Oh, THAT kind of name. I usually just call it "nForce2."

My machine: "Alison" (an old girlfriend named it that, I remember it was funny, but I don't remember why/what the joke was)

Parents old machines: "tiny1" and "tiny2" (both made by Tiny, took me a while to explain the benefit of having useful names on the network, so they were REALLY creative after that)

Sister's laptop: "alexlaptop". yeah, we're not that creative 'round here...

My computers are mostly named after their colors. There's redbox, and bluebox, and the late blackbox. My server is server1, but will be sooned renamed whitebox, or maybe tronbox, as my friends want me to do a tron theme to it. There was also POSbox, which was mostly a pile of parts that worked, no case involved, but it was a POS. Then there's my parent's comouters, with normal names like Gerald, and Linda, Gerald's Laptop, or Linda's Laptop.

I kind of liked that fruit idea though. Maybe I'l rename the computers to fruits that match their colors. Imagine, SuperBlueberry, and AmazingRaspberry. Oooh, MintyGreenbox.

I've done that myself... :p

The H20 rig is usually named "Water", the rig with the MSI K7D Master-L is "Duallie"...

When I'm building a rig to evaluate hardware that requireds a fresh install of the OS, it usually gets named "Test".

Boring? Perhaps....but sure is easy to remember. :p

What if you had a brushed aluminum SilverStone or a CoolerMaster? I can't think of any "silver/aluminum" coloured fruits... :p

My last job named them after Star Wars. (E.G. Deathstar, Hoth, etc.)

I'm less creative. I use the name of the user themselves. Nick, Gretch, Main. I don't know why mine is called Main. I did it and I can't explain it. My dual boot rig is call WinME_Linux. My laptop is called laptop. My server is called server. See it all works out except for mine. After seeing all of yours, I'm gonna rename them for fun.

For a client I called his new laptop Joes_lappy. He thought that was funny.

edit: maybe a greek mythology theme or something.
