View Full Version : Annoying Win98 SE "bug"

Whenever I click on a URL from anywhere BUT Internet Explorer, I crash Explorer.exe. This crap just started happening last week, no software or hardware changes at all. I can only click a URL from the favorites in IE, Netscape 6.1, and Outlook Express.
A URL from anywhere in the start menu, folder, or desktop and I get a crash.
Anyone ever had this problem? Anyone have the slightest idea of how to fix it?

The higher the version of IE, the buggier it gets (especially with 5.5 and higher).
I found that an over-the-top install helped with error messages that I was getting using 5.01. My problems started suddenly also.
Hope this helps!

Well, downgrading is not something I want to do. I am toying with just installing IE again. What else can I do?

The day when I reformat and install WinME for my gaming and "no-purpose" computer use is coming quick. After having Win98 SE run flawless for about a year, it has gone straight to hell in a very quick way. Too much data to risk losing in another reinstall of Win98 SE or moving it all to WinME. I plan to move my important stuff to Win2K or XP Professional... having used Win2K at work for sometime now I have complete (well, not complete... it is still MS software! ;-) ) trust in it. I beat on that at work a million times worse than I do at home... keeps on ticking!
Numerous Explorer.exe crashes, can not use a link from desktop or anywhere in start menu, and just being a pain in the ass.
Once I get another system....
had to rant... very frustrated... thanks for reading... share my frustration?

lol most of us do. Then we become Linux users.
I have noticed that Windows 98SE is being a lot buggier lately. I wonder if some virus has sneaked in.. my virus scanner hasn't picked one up, however.

In most all likely hood Bubba aka William Gates III more than likely had the OS programed to become out dated after some ammount of time and to trigger crashes and page faults. I had a problem with my Windoze system but when have I not had a problem with it. Mr gates is a very shady buissness man. Its like the fact of the hidden TCP/IP stack that send info to the NSA about everywhere you go and everything you do. Also their is a spot in you reg where it caches every site you ever visit. People ask me why I format so often. I tell them cause windows suck and it does.
I turned the Pio modes up to high like mode 4 and fubared the data clusters of the disk. Its a bad idea to do something like that when your overclocked the system will go crazy.

Where is this spot in the registry? I'd like to see this . . .

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\TypedURLs
You can clear these out, either manually or with software such as cyberclean (get it at cnet - it's shareware, and very cheap to buy).
I don't know about the TCP\IP stuff.

Thanks man. I'm gonna remember that :)
If it wasn't for games and a few apps I need all my PC's would have Linux on them, right now linux is only on 2 machines.
hmmmm on second thought I can move the needed apps over to my mac (mac vers are available) and maybe just dual boot a machine or 2 for games :)
The things mentioned above are just one more good reason to find an alternative to MS BS

Doesn't anyone back up data anymore ? Any OS can crash at any given time. Do yourself a favor and back up your data at least once a week. It just makes good sense. And it is easy !

Back up data, yes I do. I have copies of the must not/can not lose data. I just can not commit to the time it takes to perform a format, reinstall, configure, hunt for a random driver to something you never heard of but Windows demands you have it and it is not available on the Windows cd, and the fine tuning that a complete reinstall requires.
I guess I was just bitching for the hell of it. I did have Win98 SE running great for a long time! I don't know what brought on this latest set of crashes, maybe I looked at it wrong the other day!

I have a dual boot with 98 and nt 4. My 98 crashs often and when I speed test my 56k connection, in nt4 I get 4-6k/s while in 98 I get at most 3k/s. I just say I hate 98 with a passion but only have it play games once in a while and for my digital camera which is usb. For a windows OS I can't wait to get nt 5.0 aka win2k
it combines nt4 with features from 98 like usb and direct X.
