I was curious if anyone knows how high the upgrade path for Athlon's will go without changing the motherboards?

I have a friend with a new computer with a 1.0 athlon 200fsb.

Mine is a new 1.4 athlon with 266fsb.

How much higher will the athlon's go in these series without needing a new board?

if you have Softmenu or the like, they can go on forever. although, the tbird line will probably end pretty soon, the newer generation mobos support both current tbirds and the up and coming athlon 4's.

Both systems are Compaq's.

I guess that means that it is a little harder to upgrade, probably used the cheapest motherboards they could?

it's not possible to upgrade on the compaq unless it has jumpers for you to select higher multipliers and fsb

if you want to upgrade you will have to buy a new motherboard, a new case and probably sound card and video card too since they got those intergrated on the motherboard

The case will do fine, except you won't have much air flow inside. Lucky you don't have a new HP (serie line 8xxx, 9xxx, 6xxx, maybe more but donno about the others). In these little puppies, and I said LITTLE, you almost have to take appart the entire system only to SEE the CPU !!! And there is almost no space inside !

Actually I know that I can upgrade the chip (you can order new faster chips from Compaq, for some serious change $) And I have nothing integrated on the motherboard, it came with a Soundblaster 5.1 pci card , and an Nvidia 32mb agp card , which replaced with a 3dfx5500. I was just wondering how high the chips can go. When I ordered both of the systems the had several processors offered. It was off of the "configure your own" section of Compaq.

I don't think you can overclock new compaqs. Check for your system at this site : http://www.compaq.com/athome/support/msgs/. Maybe you can find the jumpers configuration (if there are any)

Good luck
