HI everyone,
First let me say that I've overclocked old 486s before, but now it seems there are more stuff to do when overclocking. My question is this I have a Abit BH6 v1.01 bios HN. I upgraded my bios now so I can support 8x multiplier. What I want to know is if I get a Celeron 566 OC@850mhz *850minimum* but my MB only supports up to 700mhz. What will happen? What will it say when I boot up? With my MB whats a good Celeron to get? I read a lot about each one. And I just want something stable and I know the 566 will be stable @ 850. For me I guess I want to reach somewhere near the 1ghz. OH and what if I did go 1ghz what will my MB recognize it? Also I'm getting a slot key, dunno the brand yet, and a golden orb. Please enlighten me with your wisdom.

Wlecome to the Forums! You will get lots of answers to your questions here...........unfortunately, I'm not one of the more knowledgeable overclockers!!

Good luck!

I'm so in needed of OC. So to recap my abit bh6 ver1.01 has a multipler up to 8x and FSB up to 133. What is my best bet to get over 1ghz or very close. Please give me your suggestions.

Multiplier doens't matter on Intel based boards since they are locked. Just because your board has 8X listed as it's max it will go beyond it...the chip will make it. The only thing holding you back would be if your motherboard does not go past 133MHz.

The P3 700 will only let you get 933 if you're limited to 133MHz on the FSB. The 800 is probably your best bet in which case I would just spend the cash on a 1GHz and overclock it to at least 1.13. Both my cD0 and cC0 chips do 1.13 easily.

If you're going the Celeron route then you have more room. The 800 starts out at 100MHz so you have 33 more to work with. At an 8 multiplier you could hit 1064 which has been well within reach from these processors from what I've seen.

In short, don't worry about the multiplier as it's locked on the chip-side. Your board will take whatever you put in it as long as it conforms to the 133MHz FSB limit it has.

If it will post and start booting into Windows or actually makes it into Windows but freezes, that is the first indication you need a little extra voltage to your CPU to get it to handle the higher clock speed. More speed takes more power!
