View Full Version : VGA Silencer - really an improvement?

I got a Powercolor 9800Pro flashed to XT, but it gets real hot (with artifacts after awhile), and its really noisy. My first thought was to go extreme and watercool the card, but i might as well try the VGA silencer first.

To someone who owns that thing:

Will the VGA silence cool my VGA much better then the stock thing, and at preferably a lower noise level?

At the website they make all kind of claims etc, but i'd like to know from someone with the same videocard.

Yes. The VGA Silencer is much better than the stock cooler because it has a bigger surface area and exhausts the air out of the case instead of sending it back into the case to recirculate. I don't know how much quieter it is since when I had the stock cooler I had some really loud fans in my system, though even now I can't hear a difference between high and low mode on the Silencer.

I've used the VGA silencer, and I recently installed a water cooling setup with a DangerDen Maze4 gpu and the water block works much better. I went from 420Mhz (gpu w/vga) to 441Mhz (gpu w/Maze4 installed). Ths VGA works, but if your leaning towards water in the future then save your money and get a good water cooling setup

I can't say from experience yet but I just ordered my VGA Silencer (http://www.svc.com/vga-rev3.html) Rev 3 for $9.99 w/coupon code "SVCREV3" plus shipping.

Well.. I got 415-420 with the stock cooler and with the VGA silencer I can get 435-440.. and it's quiet.

The default fan isn't loud per-se, but it's whiney.

and when you are running a big game like far cry and it gets a little choppy, that 20 extra mhz can go a long way. i can't wait until they release one for my card!

Hmz.

What about compatibility? I have a powercolor 9800pro (XT flashed), will the silencer fit? At the place where im going to get it, they mention nothing about it.

yeah pro definitely fits as long as it is a revision 3 silencer. you can find compatibility stuff on the arctic cooling site. xt does not fit

My 9800 Pro modded to XT with Rev3 Silencer, and I have clocks, 470/370

Anyone else have problems upping the Mem? I can't seem to get it very high above the original XT speeds, even tho this is way above 9800 pro speeds.

right now, flashed to XT i am having artifacts in painkiller and farcry: small white spots that flash over the skins of some objects, which looks like memory failure

I was under the impression that the Revision 2 was for the 9800pros while the revision 3 was for the 9600s and the XT series.

nope sorry ;)

that is accurate although there will not a be a "silencer xt" they will be making 4 different series for at cards and dropping the "vga silencer" product

does anyone know *why* some revs. dont fit some cards? im not afraid of some modding, so if its only minor, its not a problem

here's a post i made on the new guys: http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=312594&

if you haven't got it, it might be worth waiting since they will have copper cores and integrated ram cooling
