I am helping a mate out who has installed a 440MX 8x card into his HP machine, and the board only supports up to 4x

It gives errors on some games, and mentions Nwiz.dll

I have replaced the original card and am half-way through rebuilding the PC with the recovery CD. I had planned to install the new card, and try again

Any thoughts as to what the prblem might be?

Yes you can put a 8x card into a 4x motherboard.

Recently, I fitted a Ti4200 with 8x agp onto a 4x motherboard.

The card displayed artifacts and caused system instability.

Most 8x cards will work on 4x motherboards, but there are exceptions that refuse to function correctly

Thanks to you both... I suspect that is the problem here. I'll be suggesting he upgrade his system.

It has to do with whether or not the card requires the higher voltage 8x agp or not. I had my card in a 4x agp slot about 6 months ago and had no problems.
