EDIT. This poll is closing in on it's second birthday, and it's long overdue for an overhaul or replacement.

Now...as I'm a trifle unfamiliar with the "latest and greatest" of intels offerings (I know a bit of Willie, and Northie, and these new HT chips, but not specifics). If someone would care to PM me with a list of ten variables, that includes as much of all intel variants as possible...say start with "Pentium and Lower", then "PII", "P///", etc...I'd be glad to start a new poll for you guys.

Brian

Just thought I'd put this out there, to see what people are actually running. For those that have multiple systems, using different chips, the one I'm interested in is your MAIN rig.

Fro example, I've got quite a few chips about right now, but the cpu in my MAIN rig, is a P/// 600E, so I'd vote for the P///.

Let's see how this goes.....:D

*edit*

OMG..it's back again! LOL Thread's almost 10 months old...

That P/// 600E wasn't my main for much longer after I posted this..., and today resides in Indiana. It's a trip seeing stuff you posted so long ago brought back up sometimes...gives you a glimpse into how far you've come in that time....;)

Isn't this supposed to be about your MAIN pc only?

1 PC listed per post?

I may have started things off badly because its a dual cpu machine!

For now the BP6 is my main "Intel" system (at least till I get the new system up and running) I use it as a file, web, ftp, hotline, telnet server running Linux. I also do a bit of browsing and dl all my mail on it........reason being no worrys about viri!

I'm not 100% sure what that board will support, but, the next logical choice would either be one of the P/// "E" chips (600, 700, 800) or one of the new 100FSB Celerons (800, 850, 900).

Ive read some really good stuff about those new Celerons....800 @1000+, 850 @ 1100+. Mindboggling stuff.

I just got a BE6 II, and have now gotten the chips in my "sig" to (I'm pretty sure stably) :

600E @ 993 MHz
700E @ 994 MHz

And I'll be danged if'n they both don't top out ONE FSB SHY OF THE GIG....EACH !!

**sigh** I can't win....LOL

Bear in mind, the P/// has a much more superior L2 cache, and will run a higher FSB, which increases memory bandwidth, etc...

It also is an unwritten guideline, that an overclocked Celeron is the equivalent of a P/// 150 to 200 MHz slower.

So those chips of mine are roughly equal to a Celeron clocked to 1150 to 1200MHz.....

In the end, that board you've got will have a large part in determining where you go from here (what will it support?? Any BIOS upgrades that will enable support for chips you can't run now??) Unless you upgrade the mobo too, in which case..... :D

my first main build was a cel366-550 at 100fsb. put that into another build which i play with at work and upgraded my main to a cel533-850 at 100fsb or something like that. really getting interested in a 800 to push my abit be6-2 ata 66 to around 120 fsb with my preinstalled 133 ram just waiting for the day. should really see a perf change if i jack the processor and fsb at same time. curious whether the divisors on the pci and agp will be adequate.

yeah, that 533-850 was supposed to be the 566-850 at 100fsb. i knew it didn't look right but was in a hurry. : )

I did some quick tests with my Celeron 850 @ 1003 (using a SK6 now). I used Sandra CPU en MM benchmarks.
In both tests my 1003 was a little bit higher than a genuin P/// 1GHz. Although I'm unsure whether that is a 100MHz or a 133MHz FSB P///.

Ok, just got the 600 to 900.
The problem is the crappy slocket. I´ve replaced the eletrolitic capacitors on it for tantalium caps (is tantalium the correct word ? I don´t know, english is not my mother language).

The difference is amazing. It´s a faster AND more stable system.
It still doen´t go over 900. Working on that, but I guess I´ll have to buy another slocket.

I don't know the engineering jargon for it but there is some sort of electical loss created by going through a socket adapter. One suggestion would be the ASUS CUSL2-C. This will also remove the BX to 133MHZ headaches. I used this board to push a PIII 700E to 933 rock stable.

Not an intel in the bunch here, unless you count my 286 laptop which may or may not have an intel brand chip in it. Just thought I post here to mention that one category has been left out, although no on seems to need it. You forgot the Pentium Pro. As of this moment, I'm running the 800EB in my main rig (hopefully replaced by a Tualatin within the next month or two). In other rigs, I'm running: 1000EB, Celeron 900, dual PII 400s and a Celeron 266.

Also have a few Pentium boxes still around doing nothing. Hopefully, construction of P3V4X/PII 300 and P3B-F/P2 400 combos will begin this weekend if the parts get here in time. A 200MHz/512K PPro is also in the works.

1st rig was a lowly Packard Bell PII-350. (god, if I only knew then what i know now...:eh?:)
Bought an Iwill somethin' or other and pilfered everything usable out of the PB rig and tossed that POS!

Needed more speed so I went to a PIII-550. Found this site by accident and started my journey down the path of overclocking. Managed to get that sucker up to 733. Tried to flash the bios at one point and ended up with a really big keychain.
Read some good things about the Abit BE6-II and have been using that mobo since spring of '99.
I've since sold the 550 for a PIII-700 which is now at 980.
Currently looking at going for the Celeron 1.1a with an Abit ST6(non-raid)
So there you have it....

So those chips of mine are roughly equal to a Celeron clocked to 1150 to 1200MHz.....

So umm, I guess this unwritten guideline doesn't apply to me ;) :

Heh. On par with a P/// @ the same speed. I would take it higher but ASUS is being a ***** and not fixing my BIOS (option to adjust voltages is there, it just doesn't work). :) Ah well. I'm emailing them once a day until I get a response. Oh yeah, they won't even comment about it. Heh. *******s.

Micron Dual PPro200 on an old Micronics Lightning One mobo. Ran on w95 it's whole life so far. I'm upgrading to 98se soon.

When those crazy bidders on ebay have had their fill, I'll try to get w2kpro for well under the current average of U$130. That would support both CPUs as part of a dual OS boot option. I'm not sure I want to bother with NT4. I'll keep this machine as my sentimental backup.

Upgrading my main to a P4 1.8A. Was hoping for a C1 stepping (SL6LA). Got a SL63X (Phillipines) instead. Don't go to NewEgg for a C1. The packing date on this thing is 7/24/2002 and I ordered it 12/20/2002. If anyone knows the stepping for that sspec please pm me. Thanks in advance.:)

Seems VERY high for a P4. Are you using Arctic Silver 3? That will lower your CPU temp. Also, have you measured the temp via an external probe? Your board probe may be off just a tad.

no I'm not using AC3 I'm just using the stock HSF and tape stuff that was on the bottom.. and I used the BIOS and Asus probe.
I dont have anything to test the temps with.. I need to get AC3 I guess.. with the case I have you would thing it would be lower..

AS3 promotes better contact between the CPU & heat sink. It is MUCH better than that nasty tape that Intel ships with the P4's (you should be at 31C-38C with AS3 & the bundled heat sink). I would imagine that this is your problem. BTW, an external probe with LCD readout can be had at Radio Shack for $20 or so.

As this poll heads towards it's second "birthday/anniversary"...it's come to my attention it should be closed, and a new one take it's place.

Please see the initial post of this thread (so many pages and days ago...LOL), where I have just edited this.

Basically, the edit is asking for one thing. If someone would be kind enough to put together a list of ten variables, comprehensively including pre-Pentium to date, I'd be glad to start a brand new Poll.

We'll keep the old one, just close it, and link to it from the new one.

I'm running a 478 PresHot 3.2@3.75 Good Chip
My strange system though is my HP 850 chipset Rambus Memory orginally a 423 Pentium 4 2.0, modded to a 478 Retro Socket 2.8 Pentium 4 with 400FSB, very very rare Processor :0) Its my Windows 2003 Server, runs great very stable and I got rid of the also very rare 2.0 P4/423 Socket on ebay for over $150 which just about paid for the other P4 I got off ebay.

You can't say Intels aren't upgradable, esp when I thought I was at the end of the road for the 423 Socket and 2.0 :0) If only I had a hack bios on this HP I could OC it as its an Asus MOBO, the famous P4T-E with 512MB of Samsung Rambus memory (looks cool) HP always has/d better guts then Dell
