greetings, just got my wife a soyo 7isa+ MB and a celeron 700 cpu dirt cheap. the MB came with smartguardian and it is showing the cpu temp as 79 C. is'nt this like really hot ?

Hi xanthan, wellcome to the Forum.
It's absolutly dangerous!! with this temp you fry your chip!
it must work around 40-45 degree C.
What kind of cooler you've on the chip? is the fan on the heat sink working?
do you have teh thernal past on or applied properly?

i am using the fan/heatsink that came with the cpu, yes the fan is working. the heatsink doesnt seem to feel hot to the touch. could it be that the temp is not being read right for some reason ?

do i need thermal paste on it if its not overclocked ?

Yes, always is needed in a thin layer.
Witch program are you using to monitor the temps?
I suggest you MotherBoardMonitor, but must be setted to work properly, http://mbm.livewiredev.com/

ok here are 2 possibilities.....
1) The heat sensor is not working properly.
2) You are using a program from windows to tell your temps, and is not reading the correct sensor.
if it is #1 then try getting a probe and put it right next to the core, touching it.
if it is #2, then restart, go into your bios, and look at the temp from there.

Forget it!
check the way's suggested by Carmine and use MBM, is a must! :D

Considering the fact that most Intel chips reach thermal meltdown at 80c, I would have to venture a guess that your thermal monitor is not up to snuff. I would try some of the above suggestions and see what you come up with using an alternate means of monitoring the temp.

I got MBM but it is shwoing the same temp as smart guardian, alrm started going off as soon as i got it set up hehe.

I went to the soyo website, in the faq it says the 80 C temp is the core temp ? it had a link to intels site and it said the same.
in smart guardian it shows 2 temps 1 says CPU=79C the other system=27C
so do i have a problem or not ?
thanks for any help, Xan

The system temps is referred to the temp of your Mobo, and is OK, but the Cpu temp is absolutly dangerous and you have a big probs!

Well that looks hot.
But - mine was even hotter when I oced it really high and I didn't notice the overheat, because I went to the bathroom... After two mins, when I came back, it locked up as I walked into the room and it started to smell like the chip was frying. But it still works :) I've put the HS off and I noticed that the blue-layer thingie on the core, that comes with the processor was thinner.. I guess it melted :) The HS was so very hot and the whole socked was really hot as well :P But like I said, it still works.. Now I'm waiting for water cooling :D

somethign rrrrrrrrreeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaalllllllyyyyyy wroing there.. and you should have a white pad from the intel sink already...

ok here is the problem, soyo screwed up it seems on the 7isa+ mb, seems that the temp just isnt read right and they are working on a new program that willt ake that into account. supposedly if it says 80 C then its right where it should be..
thx for the help, Xan

First thing is first. Get rid of that heatsink, and fan. Even OEM fans are better. If you can't do that, at least go to Radio-Shack and pick up some heat sink compound, remove the thermal pad that comes with the stock HSF (use a mineral spirit to remove it, lighter fluid, works pretty well, but leaves a residue you have to wipe off with a damp rag), and put the heatsink compound in it's place. The stock Intel heatsink and fan combos are rated for the speed the procsessor is supposed to run at. The celeron 700 heatsink is tiny! I have an 800 celeron, and I don't think I ever used the heatsink that came with it. I lapped a 933 heatsink, put a 1Ghz fan on it. I have since replace it withan OEM heatsink made by "coolermaster" (I don't suggest you use this), and then an Alpha PEP66T. The Alpha allowed me to reach 1066Mhz (1.066Ghz), stable. Till I stupidly knocked it off my desk, while fiddling with my system, and put a huge gouge in the heatsink. I'm waiting for the arrival of another to replace it, but enough about me. With temps that high, I wouldn't even try OC'ing until you solve your heat problem. Normal idle temp should be 40°C, or within a few degrees of that, if not lower. 79°C is WAY too high. Check around the site to see what heatsinks may work for you, but definately get rid of the stock one and replace it with a better one. Also, NEVER install a heat sink without heatsink compound.

I just turn on my M/B and my Celeron CPU temperature on the BIOS shows 78C, is this normal?
Yes this is normal, because the M/B measures the temperature of the CPU core not by temp. diode. To check for the CPU spec, please go to Intel website
thats from the soyo FAQ from suport FAQ
intel says 80C is normal core temp. the tech i talked to at soyo said they are making a new harware monitoring program that will take this into account, guess i just cant use MBM or smart guardian for now.
thx, Xan

80°C is MAX temp. You're on the verge of burning your CPU. Belive and do what you want to, but most of the guys around here have been doing this for a long while and know what they are talking about. In my books, cooling is everything.
