Hey all, what do you think is the best firewall software.. besides NORTON which is a huge memory hog.

Most people will recommend Zone Alarm Free, which is a pretty nice easy to use firewall and relatively safe. There was an exploit that flew right through it though, not sure if it has been fixed. The full version didn't have this hole.
I prefer to use as few resources as I can, so I use an older version of Kerio 2.1.5. When configured properly, it is more secure than ZA and stacks up against most firewalls. That version is not on their site anymore so you have to google to find it.
Sygate is an option that I have heard good things about as well, but have yet to try it.

Yeah, i currently use Sygate PRO and it works rather well, I'm just exploring new ideas. :santa:

You think i didn't search for all the firewalls?
Panda
ZA
Sygate
Kaspersky
Norton
McAfee
And if you go to each site, they only list the pros of ones product, not cons which is why im asking the forums for past or present experiences.

I used to use Tiny, it is a great one. Though, the code is the same as Kerio. If I remember right, some of the programmers left Tiny and released Kerio as their own seperate entity.
Both very nice, the new version of Kerio is pretty bloated, I don't know about newer releases of Tiny.

its more of a "hardware" firewall, but it will beat ANYTHING :)

I recommend a hardware firewall. Problem is, that Norton sometimes just closes too many ports on it's own. Zone Alarm is great if you don't want to cruise the web without some nice tinkering.
Spend about the same price for Norton System Works and get a cheapy linksys hardware firewall or something.
I use Kerio and the only problem is with version 2.15 which is just TPF version 2.15a with all the patches, is that it can cause some systems not to enter hibernation. I just switch back to TPF if Kerio causes a problem.

search.
I understand you probably don't want to sit stationary at the keyboard for too long, and I wouldn't want you to get popped by a sniper either over there, but I am still confident that you can be more helpful than this... Why tell someone to search when you do not offer to do this yourself at the moment?
Anyways, I appreciate the service you are doing for me, and this is the least I could do for you:

I've been using ZA free v. for the past, let's say 2 yrs and I'm pretty satisfied with it. I've heard people say that it's a mem hog, but i've never had problems. I like the ease of setting up program access rights.

Essentially a "hardware" firewall is a software firewall :) to get technically - i beleive
routers run O/S so to say which is where the firewall is.
sygate personall firewall (free)
works great for me

i used ZoneAlarm for about 5 months and then i switched to ZoneAlarm Pro and all my Gifs stopped working, i couldnt access most web pages and i got more red X's then ever before.
I then switched to ISS Black Ice and the damn engine would never stay up. It had application protection which seemed more work then what it should be and it never remembered what applications i had.
Im givign this Sygate a try... hope you guys are right..
i use zone alarm pro on one computer its the pay version (snickers a little) and i use sygate on another comp. am i pretty secure?

On Windows XP, Zone Alarm free will just stop allowing access to the internet sometimes. I have to close it and restart it for it to work. It won't work very long at all if I'm using Emule. I just have to turn the thing off when using Emule.
I'll give the free Sygate firewall a try.

if you're looking at smoothwall, i'd like to recommend Astaro Security Linux (http://www.astaro.com)
it has a nice layout. it's a trial product, but you can register for the home user license, which is free. you lose a few fuctions, but i forget what they are. usually not much impact on a home user.

I'm insulted that you think I use IE .

Warez talk isn't allowed. Right now, you're begging to be banned.
Jarlaxe,
you might want to reconsider your attitude and your previous posts. That is one way to get a 3 day vacation from the forums (Warez) and I can guarantee your attitude about the rules of the forum leaves a lot to be desired and very well could help push a moderator to giving you a 3 day vacation.:(

Zome alarm is ok, but I would suggest using a hardware firewall or a linux firewall every time. Means it is not using resources up on your rig.
