I just came across seti and I think it is very cool. I want to join but i will not have the internet for a while. (modems and water don't mix:) ) Is it still possible to join though? Or maybe another kind of project?
You can still join if you have access somewhere else (which you obviously do). May not be able to get any work units out but once you get that connection back you can start catching up!
Welcome to the best SETI team on the net!!!

I have a family computer with the internet so can i get the assignments, let my computer solve them, stick the answers on a disk and then go on the internet and give the answers to Seti? I know this sounds stupid but I really want to learn.
Sure, you can do that.
It might be a little slow but you could set everything up on floppy and just transfer back and forth until you get your connection back.

If you have the time could you give me instructions on how to do this plz?
Wow ! I don't know how to help you, but your will to start crunching is amazing. That's the spirit we like in the team...!
Go for it dude !
You'll want to go HERE (http://overclockers.ws/seti/Instr1.htm) and download and the linked programs. Follow the directions EXACTLY as they list except you will want to put these programs on a floppy instead of your hard drive. Whenever a WU is complete you'll need to move it to the PC with an internet connection so it can transmit then just move it back to your PC.
That's all there is to it. Welcome to the team and start crunching!

I went to the link and downloaded SETIspy.exe and SETIdriver.zip. I am running windows ME so do I need to get i386-winnt-cmdline.exe? I went into it but it talked all about linux and i couldn't find any download icons. Is there any other programs I will need?

Here is the direct download you need Windows CLC (ftp://ftp.cdrom.com/pub/setiathome/setiathome-3.03.i386-winnt-cmdline.exe)

yes… you will need the cmdline.exe that is the actual SETI client… you can get that via FTP here (ftp://ftp.cdrom.com/pub/setiathome/setiathome-3.03.i386-winnt-cmdline.exe)
good luck & WELCOME to the TEAM!!!

Ok, I have all the programs downloaded. Now how do I sign up on a team? Or do I do that after I setup the programs?
Install the software, and when SETI starts up, It will recognize that you are missing the .sah file containing your user data. It will ask you to either be a returning user, or a new user. Choose the new user. It will ask you some questions, just answer them. It will get the WU, and then start running!
BTW: I wouldn't install the programs just to the floppy. It would run really slow when accesing the files (the floppy drive speed is really slow...). I'd install it onto both the HD and the floppy. When you need a new WU, just stick the floppy in the computer with the connection, and get the WU. Then copy the entire contents of the disk to your seti folder on the HD. Start the client on the HD, and you'll be going good. Another good thing... You won't have to have the disk in the drive whenever you are running seti!!

Ok, I put the files on MY comp and ran SETI Driver. I configured everything ,I had to open a new account . I filled out all the information but I got a sign that told me it could not connect to the server and I'm stuck back at square 1. Do I have to set up the programs on my floppy on the computer with the internet then download to my comp?

Any 1?
Yeah... You got to run the program from the floppy, (on the computer with internet) and get it all set up. Then, after its all set up, it will download the WU, and after it is finished, you need to set up SETI driver to cache the WU to your floppy, and finally copy the floppy to the computer you will crunch on.
Hope this helped...

Then What do I do when the WU is done?
if you copied it to the hard drive then you need to copy the folder back to your floppy take it to the computer with the internet and start the program running again so it will transmit the WU.

You could also use Seti Driver (or several other caching programs) to increase the WUs you can do between transmissions. I always use 10 (Driver's limit) so if the Seti servers go down my computer has something to work on for a couple days. It should work just as well using the floppy methods. Each WU needs around 350k so you'd have to do a few disk swaps to use 10 but you could do 2 or 3 easy enough in one shot.
