View Full Version : BOINC-SETI Rollcall

Dk Jedi Allianc, made what I thought was a very good suggestion in another thread when he mentioned we should have a thread just for posting the names of those who have made the choice to commit some or all of their crunching power to BOINC-SETI and therefore establishing a strong presence for Overclockers.com Seti Team with that project from the very start. If I may be so bold, I'm going to get the ball rolling so that everyone can see how things are going over there.

Naturally I'm crunching under the Username "SkyHook", and at the time of this posting I have 6 machines including 1 Dual AMD machine which have "Granted Credits" of 17,179.44 with a "Recent Average Credit" of 1143.05.

The Team as a whole is currently in 11th place worldwide with Total Credits of 80375.75 and adding fast.

Maybe this thread will catch on and provide people who decide to migrate over with a list of people who can provide assistance in tackling any problems with their transition.

Currently, I'm crunching under the username "Puffy" (same as in SETI 1), though that may be chaning soon.

I've got both my boxes, a XP1800 and a P4 1.8, both donating 100% resource share to SETI 2. When the BOINC Beta comes back online, the XP1800 will be donating 10% resource share to that project as well.

Thanks JigPu for the stats displayer link :)
To those that will be starting up with BOINC, be patient, your credits will come eventually.

Mictlan and I joined forces and are now crunching in one account:

My Barton @ 2,21 (between 5-8 hours per day)

Mictlan´s laptop with Centrino 1500 Mhz (1 MB L2) 24/7 i think

Granted credit 776,28

EDIT: Make that 1328,81 granted credit :)

Darn it! Thought I might stay ahead of Mictlan, but with the two of you together, it's going to be tough.

...wonder if there's any problem leaving my sisters's laptop (Athlon Mobile 1.4) on 24/7 to crunch... :D

Great link there! I hate how the BOINC stats page won't let you sort by anything, and makes it insanely hard to see where you stand on the team. Also good to see just how many active users (instead of total) we have going.

I should have a dually up end of july/beginning of august

That is in fact one of the best links I have seen thus far! Eyeless, he states in the intro to his pages that he intentionally does not include zero accounts in his data in order to conserve space in his database, therefore if you have recently started doing BOINC and have yet to receive any "Granted Credits" you will not show up on his pages. As soon as your "Granted Credits" start rolling in you should appear.

That being the case, the next thing to look at is how often he is updating his database information. This I'm not sure of, and in reality am just trying to find reasons why you wouldn't appear on his listing.

SkyHook

ADDITIONAL:

Current status:
Total number of teams in database: 1213
Tobal number of users in database: 9865
Last teams database update: July 9th, 1:14(CDT) (18.03 hours ago)
Last users database update: July 9th, 1:37(CDT) (17.64 hours ago)

That is from his page listing all the teams, did you have credits prior to that time? If not then you should show up after the next update of his database. If you did have credits prior to that time I'm not sure what the explanation might be.

EyelessFace, when did you join the team originally(SETI 1)?

I'm wondering if the date Berkeley originally used to transfer the SETI 1 stats over was possibly a date prior to your joining up with overclockers.com's seti team.

Check your account page, from the SETI Boinc website to verify that it does say you belong to the team. It'll be under account statistics. If not,(if its like the Predictor Boinc was) you should be able to choose join team, and do a search for a team name, overclockers.com will bring us up and you can rejoin hopefully.

Pretty sure im a member, and have been for about 2 weeks now.

I joined SETI1 under a diff name, SyntheticViolence, but had to changed my email, and could no longer access the paticulars of that account. I then rejoined under Sokar in SETI1 and did 180 WU, switching between it, BOINC (when it worked), and folding.

I should be on that website, but I am not, and do not know why.

Hmmm... Well, apparently you're not the only one. While searching for you on BOINCs page, I found a few others with sufficient credit to have showed up but wern't there. Perhaps his DB dosen't search down that far through BOINCs pages, or something else?

It's definatly weird though.

I'm pretty sure that they took the snapshot of members back in early May. The number of WUs they say that I have completed under SETI1 are about 1000 short of where I switched over to BOINC (which places it in early to mid May). Since you joined up on June 10th, you won't be in the old member DB.

SkyHook
07-10-04, 01:24 AM
I have researched my stats records as well as your screen shots and this is what appears evident with the fact I know.

1) You joined Overclockers.com Seti Team as "Sokar" for Phase 1 on June 10, 2004 which was after the snapshot was taken that is the basis of the Team roster on the BOINC site. This means you didn't get a carryover inclusion to the team for BOINC. As such you had to register for BOINC and then join Overclockers.com Seti Team on the BOINC site. Your name would have been added to the bottom of the already existant team roster.

2) Because of all the problems that Berkeley has had, one space saving measure they have taken is to temporarily truncate everybody's Team list to appox 1000 members. By signing up for the Team you would be occupy a team slot of something more like 1600-1700 and that is why we haven't been able to find you on the Berkeley website list of team members.

3) I suspect that they have also truncated the XML file of the stats that this gentleman is using to collect the info for his stats page.

I may be off base on this but I do know for a fact that they have cropped all team's member lists to 1000 and I'm pretty sure that is the reason for your lack of showing up on the current stats. As soon as they either return the ability to display ALL team members or sort the current list to represent the position within the team based on a member's stats for BOINC you should then appear as you should.

As for what JigPu found I have not gotten into that scenario yet.

SkyHook

ADDENDUM:
Well as of 05:30 EDT you now appear on his list ranked at 19th on the Team so no matter what the reason for the earlier oversight you are now present and accounted for.

07-11-04, 11:14 AM
I think it was called boincview... but I just gave up on it.
the instructions look like they were written for a computer programmer.

anyways, boinc has been running for about 6 hours now I think, not sure what its doing, but it looks like it finished 2 WU's and started on some more.
but I honestly cant tell yet what it's really doing...

TC
07-11-04, 03:16 PM
Boinc view is actually fairly simple. I didn't even look at the instructions. Just start it up, right-click in the "locations" column on the left and select "add a location" type a name for the location, and for the windows gui select "via direct file access" for the "update mode" and simply browse to the root boinc folder under program files. That's it - you're done. If you want to check up on the linux command line you need to start the client with the "allow_remote_gui_rpc" switch. Then in boinc view select the rpc update mode instead of direct file access. Enter the IP address of the linux client. Done.

I think I may have also talked my old friend at my local High School (He's the Network Admin) into using the computer labs for the rest of the summer for crunching. Here is the URL for the LINUX client:
http://setiweb.ssl.berkeley.edu/download/boinc_3.20_i686-pc-linux-gnu.gz

But be aware that at the present moment that link is broken until they get the new client ready for release.

Here is the URL for the installation instructions:

Now you and I have exchanged PMs on Linux in the past so you know what a noob I am with Linux, and I was able to fairly painlessly get it up and running on my SlackWare box so it should be a no-brainer for you.

Hope it helps,

Ok, I"m running BOINC now that I hit my WU goal for Classic Seti.

How do I increase my cache in Boinc?

SunRedRX7
07-14-04, 11:05 PM
eaglescouter,

Go to the seti page for BOINC http://setiweb.ssl.berkeley.edu/

You'll see an "Your Account" link, logon using your account key(the really long string of numbers and letters).

Once logged in, you'll see under the preferences "General" and "Seti@Home". Under the General settings you can control how many days worth of WUs you wish to cache. You can also create addition prefereances, home, work, and school. Basicly its just 3 different ways to configure your computers you have.

You control the setting each computer uses by going to the main page of "Your Account" and going to "computers" under account statistics heading, and from there you can select each of your PCs individually and tell it which of the 3 preferences you want it to use.

I'm wishing for a one click install...... The folding guys have a big advantage over boinc :(

Is the monster acct number being used just to obscure the user name/email on borged computers? I really would like the simplicity of using my email for an acct identifier again, because there is no way my mother-in-law is going to do this setup over the phone.

JigPu
07-15-04, 01:35 AM
Not sure what it's use is, but BOINC definatly dosen't keep track of you by e-mail anymore. I think they wanted a system where if you changed addresses, or lost your old one, you could still do stuff with your account. But personally, I find it easier to loose some 64(?) digit number than an e-mail account :D

A one click install may be possible, though probably only with the command line version. I think the GUI installs files in weird spots, and would be hard to get working in a one click. I'll check if/when I have time though :)

I've tried off and on for the last few weeks to get into the website and switch over but it keeps telling me that they have no JezterVA account. I try to put in my email that I registered with and it tells me that they don't have that email account either. Well, I guess I didn't miss much the week I was gone then! Sounds like one big outage....

Got another cruncher BTW. I cleaned off all the spyware off a friend's system (XP2500), and running BOINC was payment for the job. Should provide a few more WUs provided BOINC and 56K work well tothether.....

Just activated Boinc last night. :p
I have been inactive for a while but decided it was time to get back into the search for ET.
I should have a couple of rigs crunching within a day or two.

I made the switch about a week ago.... I had crunched about 6000 wu. and am currently #188 on the classic team. I have been out of seti for 6-8 months (kids are a ton of work) but am back. Now sure how much I am helping as the credits are really slow to trickle in

Welcome to the team ewl2.

Keep turning in your completed units, and just have patience, the credits will eventually begin to arrive.

Must of missed this thread earlier, running two machines for boinc but moving some more over as I get time and boinc gets steadier. Guess I'll have to keep a couple machines running SETI classic just to stay in the top 100 for awhile though. Was kind of late starter in the classic so took awhile to get in the top 100, started at the same time with boinc though and I think I can keep up here. Go Xeons, dual 2.4's at 2.97 gives 4 units every 4 hours.

A snapshot of your SETI@home classic workunits was taken back on 14 May 2004. These should show up on your Boinc Account page. Welcome to Boinc. :)

You are running the only version that is available. Just don't activate or use the graphical interface or screensaver. You can run it as a service but there is no performance advantage.

I've been crunching with all 3 of my machines. User name is Moonbiter. If my wife would ever let me use her pc, I'd add a 4th.

Looking to move into the top 20 with this setup.

P4 3200E@3600 MHz
A64 FX-55 @ 2800 MHz
AXP 2500+ @ 3200+

Just need 2 new processors for my MP dually and a new motherboard for my old P4 2400C CPU and I'll be back in the game.

BOINC on!

I have a couple computers running under my name for boinc.

XP2600+ mobile @ 2.6ghz
XP1700+ @ defult ( 1.47Ghz )
AMD thunderbird ( i think ) @ ( like..1.2ghz, or less, not fully sure, my friends computer )

THen, i have another friend that will start to crunch for me, he has

P4 like...2+ ghz...not sure exactly what the specs are.

and my other friend ( brainiac1000 on boinc ) might join with me, and junk his current account. Not sure what his main rig is doing, but it crunches a Boinc WU in about...3 hours

and his laptop, which will do a wu right at about 2 hours per.

so here soon, my account should climb some ranks. ( i'm already in the top 50, i'm at rank like...48 or so )

I'm just getting rolling with my crunchers again after taking a break from SETI Classic (21,000+ WUs there)

Going to take some time to get ramped up, but currently have a p4-3.0 and 3.2 going on BOINC. Over the next month or so I'll have a 2.4, a 2.6, 2x533, a 1.8 and another 3.0 going.

I crunch under the name "Enkidu"

Enkidu,
A nice little farm you have going. You should be able to get in the neighborhood of 2000 credits a day on boinc. Be patient, it will take a week or two of crunching before the credits start rolling in.

Creepy,
Welcome to Boinc, we can use the help. Your farm may produce a 1000 a day or so. You will move up rapidly in the team standings.
