Damn, i'm kinda dissappointed with Morrowind because of performance. I go a new comp with barton 3200, 1g corsair XMS, Nvidia 6800nu, and raptor. At 1280x1024 with 4x AA 8x AF, Full lod, full shadows, all sounds, etc etc.. I get maximum 32 frames in Balmora?? You think that something is wrong with my system, or is this typical? I was hoping at least 60 fps on a 2 year-old-game with a 6800. Also anything i can do to improve it through ini file?

Inside houses the frames go over 100 easily, nature is around 40. IMO for my system this is very low. Also I did not patch it because apparently the patch does nothing to improve performance, just fixes a couple bugs. Any suggestions?

Check your refresh rate, maybe you got programs running. Did you format also?

welcome to morrowind. Its always ran like that, it will for everyone. However its still a great game. and lower the aa and af down a notch.

It's a fun game but no system will ever run at it anything over 60 FPS. You're lucky you're getting 40 in Balmora.
Do not mean to hijack the thread, but does this game have online play?

Full distance and LOD will do that. There's a lot of stuff to be rendered in Morrowind, more than most games. Also, 4x AA and 8x AF will definitely cut your frame rates in half. And on top of all this, who said the Morrowind engine was particularly efficient? When it came out, no one had hardware fast enough to run it will all options turned on at high resolutions with AA and AF. But then again, the draw distance is WAY farther than most modern games and it does have a lot of stuff and a lot of lighting to be done, so maybe you should just turn down the options a bit, eh? Just because you've got a 6800 doesn't mean you can instantly turn everything on in every game. Though there's always the possibility that your CPU is the bottleneck. Try turning down the AI distance and see if you get better FPS.

Morrowind's engine was way ahead of it's time. There's just so much to render when ur outside and so much AI going on that it'll bring all but the newest systems to their knees.
I run a 3200 w/ 5800nu @ 1600x1200 noAA/2xAF and I get between 20-40 frames outdoors. All details are max except for shadows. I don't really care for Morrowind's shadows; imo they make the game look worse.
For ur system jarlaxe, I'd say trim down the AA/AF. Keep the game details @ max (that huge draw distance is really what brings Morrowind to life), run @ 16x12, use pixel shader (relfections look good) and use say 2x4 aa/af.

Does morrowind use any of the special DX9 instructions? or is it limited to dx8?
Since its a 2002 game, i gather its DX8, but with both bloodmoon and tribunal out later, I figured it might've had a small upgrade on the graphics engine, to use some of the powerful instructions now available.
But I must say, I love this game. I got it with a FX5700, and now, just 1 month later I bought the original GOTY edition... fab game.
Must admit though, I'm running it on my game machine which has a ti4400 and 2.8 HT and 1 gb of ram... its not the worlds fastest game is it :) and the region loading really makes me explode ocassionally.
Cheers, Flix

Honestly, I found morrowind to run just fine on my TI 4200, I didn't have the eye candy on and was running at a lower res but even still, just look up at night and it's pretty easy to tell why it's hard to render.

I second that, with shadow detail turned down, you can crank everything else. I think what ever it is thats inefficient or just too much of a load is related to shadows. Turn em down to half way and your FPS will explode (not literaly).
