i m wondering how to stick a big heatsink onto the gpu

do i need super glue or epoxy?
also do i need anything else special?

and if super glue or epoxy is it anything special or just the kind u find at hardware stores?
thx

U speaking bout yer GF1? It has a clip and holes (or my ASUS had) U can use the clip for any sink U can fit under it.

I got a larger 486 sink which had right sized space for the GF1 clip. So I sawed off a corner from it to fit it 45 degrees tilted (cos the clip space) under the clip. Got the temps from 60C to 50C. Mayby larger sink had faired better... Also, the heat paste looked kinda dry, but I didnt bother to change it at that time...

yes i m tlking abt the geforce256
mine doesnt have a clip

only two little white plastic tabs

i cant use those tabs as i m going to stick a heatsink that came with my duron on the gpu

So the original heatsink then has these "holes" where those white tabs connect? If the new heatsink is large enough, U could drill some holes to it for the tabs.

Very easy trick could be to just put rubberband trough the holes (after U removed the plastic tabs) and tie the ends together. Then U could put anything under the band.

Or U could cut a plastic clip from anything, like plastic soda bottle. Just drill holes for the white tabs.

Or U could build somekind of holder out of Legos :)

P.S: I presumed here that those plastic tabs are in holes on the card PCB. That there are holes on the PCB.

there are holes on the pcb.......

but i dun have the stuff needed for drilling.......

The easiest thing to do is get a golden orb, and use zip ties to hold it on "after some lapping of course"

the zip ties will go through the holes on your v card no problem and the zip times fit right between the fins on the Gorb.
you will lose a pci or two but I've seen temps drop down to 32C or so......Herc Profit 2 GTS 64 MB.

i will be thinking of that idea.......but i m just trying to use whatever i can find around the house to do this

Try this with Arctic Silver thermal adhesive(or Radio Shack thermal adhesive):

http://www.arcticsilver.com/images/adhesiveb.jpg

Simply mix up as small portion using part A and part B then add a ratio of 1/3 regular Arctic Silver to the mix

http://www.arcticsilver.com/images/as2a2.jpg

Then place the thermal adhesive 'blend' on 4 corners of the item your about to affix and use regular AS2 ( or thermal paste you have) on the rest of the surface area, should you ever decide you want to remove the heatsink, removal is easy. SUPERGLUE SHOULD BE AVOIDED AS THE THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY OF SUPER GLUE S#CKS!

I have ZIP ties that go through the holes, weave through the fins and loop together.. also have 2 sets of ties running around the card (through fins and between the gaps of the agp slot and card and outer edge of card)..card bends a bit but works.

What about contact cement?

Well Ive found rubber bands to work suprisingly well. U just need to get them tight enough. And a quality band, not those that get all hard and cruble into peaces... I think the original red ones are the best.

U can either cut the bands and tie the ends, or U can simply put a loop trough the hole and something trough the loop to top of the PCB to hold the band there.

Ofcourse if the sink is heavy then the bands are not so good idea. U need to get those heavy duty bands that postmen use! :)

Hmm, look around the house. What do U have? Use yer imagination. Something to go trough the hole, that can somehow attach the sink. Zip ties are very good. If U have them. But Id try to avoid allsorts of glues or other sticky stuff. Invent a strap instead.

thx for all the replys

first of all the artic silver compound is not an option for me as it costs too much.......it's like 30$ US at where i live

my card only have two holes for mounting the fan

rubber bands......the ones i used couldnt tie the heat sink hard enough

the heatsink falls off after i move the card a little and they snapped

my heatsink is something like the p3 heatsink

Sky,

Radio Shack makes a thermal adhesive, and I am fighting myself in writing this next few words, but you could as a last resort use 4 small drops of superglue on the corners and thermal paste on the rest.....But if you can use Radio Shack thermal adhesive on the corners.

Trouble with rubber bands is they dry out over time and could break depending on the atmosphere there exposed to and most likely in your pc case the envirnment is hotter than the ambient outside air

well.....since i live in hong kong so there is no radio shack

if superglue then is it like special super glue or the ones u use for plastic, wood and stuff like that?

Superglue is called cyanoacrylates and was discovered by accident by Dr. Harry Coover During World War II,

"I was working with some acrylate monomers that showed promise. But everything they touched stuck to everything else. It was a severe pain."

Ok enough on the history lesson

Silversinksam,
You need to get out more often, that was way too much information on simple superglue. I have used it before for holding HSF's to video cards and others w/ no ill affects. My card temp is currently 24c using A/S in the middle and superglue on the corners.
What ever floats your boat!

ok.....so i m thinking this is generic superglue

thx.....i go grab some of it today

Dawhip, I am a young retired engineer and I have a passion for helping others and I really like this OCing hobby of mine, I like to know how things work, hense the superglue history lesson.

Didn't mean to offend you my friend, but my boat is floating pretty well on an even keel :) ;) :p

i m so stupid........i forgot to get the super glue but instead i got some thermal tape!!!!!!!

it held my hs/f for a while but then the heatsink fell off and suddenly i get horizontal lines all across my screen!
i freaked out so i shut off the power immediately.....luckily the card is still not dead...YET

You said you have a PIII HS on this Vidcard? Its probaly too HEAVY thats why it keeps falling off. Find yourself an old 486 HS or something closer to a Vidcard HS theres plenty out there but stay away from the ORBS (IMHO). I'm using an old 486 HS 40x40 with Doublesided thermal tape from here http://millisec.safeshopper.com/39/375.htm?454 This is REAL GOOD STUFF!!!! I use it on 3 Nvidia cards @ home with no HEATING problems what so ever. I have'nt seen my Siluro go over 100f:cool:

the heatsink i m using is the one that came with my duron....it was garbage so i swapped it with a fop32 immediately.....anyways.....it should be able to hold.......i figured out how to use elastic bands to hold it but it snapped all the ones i had

this is what happened.....i got this stuff all installed, i boot into windows, talked on icq a little then i played rainbow six : rogue spear./......15 mins........suddenly these horizontal lines come across the screen and my machine stopped...i kicked the power switch immediately

SOunds like a close call. I like the superglue on the corners and as2 in the middle idea. I think I will do that b/c I don't want pay for as adhesive.

what about epoxy

!-=sky=-!
08-27-01, 04:16 AM
yes!!

i got my superglue!

i m going to rest a little and do the mod later

i come back to tell u the results if the mod worked.....if it didnt then i wont be back for a longggggggggggg while
