I'm relatively new to cable internet. Some info: Adelphia Powerlink ISP, proxy is http://proxy.pit.adelphia.net (port 8080). I was looking around the forums and suddenly everything STOPPED. not a slowdown, but this window and the one with my hotmail quit refreshing or showing pages. So I went to internet properties (IE 5.0) and unchecked the box that says to use a proxy server and now everything's back up and running perfectly. I tried pinging the proxy through the TCP/IP ping command in DOS, but my requests timed out. I don't think the server is very congested at this time of day....

Did the proxy crash (maybe they rebooted it...it's about 6 AM here...i really should goto bed) ? Should I tell my ISP?

It's possible. When I was on @Home cable they had alot of this happen with their proxy. It was also very slow most times so I never used it.

Unless you like being anonymous on the web I wouldn't even bother using a proxy...in my experience almost every company I worked for had their proxies set up terribly and didn't update their caches nearly as frequent as they could (@Home included). You could probably find a better public proxy in your area to use by searching on the internet than Adelphia's if you like the anonymity of it. Most universities have public proxies and some others run them just for the heck of it...

I don't really care for using the proxy too much. In fact, I just got a router (DI-804) and the book says to disable any proxy settings. I was just kind of curious as to why this happened and the proxy crashing was the simplest solution I could think of.

BTW: my internet went down AGAIN ca. 3 AM this morning (EST time). the cable modem was blinking at me like crazy, but the cable TV still worked. I tried it with and without the router, on two different machines, etc...but nothing worked. It works fine now, though :)

Welcome to the joys of Powerlink. For a while there, I had more downtime than uptime. In my area, they are upgrading their infrastructure and the changes are causing outages. Every time it happens, call C/S and request a credit for that day's service. Eventually, the hit to the pocketbook from enough users will prod them to ensure that the system stays up. The biggest issue I have with them is the DNS errors caused by the gateway crashing at the local office. They promise it will get better soon. One can only hope.

the service here is new and i'm pleased with it thus far. i noticed that it went out the other night, but i really should have been in bed anyway :D

but if i have any problems i'm not going to hesitate to ask for credit...why should i pay when i cannot use the service?
