I am running Suse 7.1 and occasionally when logging in and going to the desktop kde will crash and I will have to log in again, I have only noticed this when logging in as a user not root. Also I will sometimes start an app and it will crash back to the desktop especially web browsers.

This is a long shot. Do you boot into the GUI login prompt, or boot to CLI? I've found that SuSE runs better when I kill the boot into GUI bs by going into YaST 1, changing the default boot to "ascii," then rebooting.

I boot into the gui I will try changing it and see if it gets any better. Thanks

As I wrote, changing to a "normal" login prompt, logging in and then typing "startx," and hitting Enter to start KDE might help.

I've had this same freeze/lockup problem with SuSE's 6.0, 6.1 and 7.0. And not all the time!(or I'd dump SuSE---fat chance). Switching to a CLI login may only help in only one real way. With a CLI login, you now have the option to use a modified three finger salute(Ctrl-Alt-Backspace) to kill the X-Server. This helps enormously if your desktop freezes, or an app like Netscape locks up on you. Now you can free yourself of most frozen apps, just like that!

Sure, you gotta type "startx" again--but it's always something!

For some reason, Netscape doesn't always install correctly. When it doesn't, it's a royal PITA to deal with. If the browser you're having problems with is Nutscrape, I suggest a clean reinstallation of this ueber(NOT) browser.

It happens when I use netscape or Opera and konquer doesn't work at all. X doesn't lock up but the browsers crash back to the desktop and the crash handeler shoes up and debugs but I have no idea what all the lines in it are or what they are refering too.
