View Full Version : My friends PIII 500 Burning up??
My friends PIII 500 Burning up?? My friend who got a PIII500 (100fsb, 512kb cache) is running at 35-40c idle and over 60CELISIUS after playing ut or half life!!!
I got a amd tbird and is really uncomfortable seeing temps over 50c but this is on a INTEL!!!
I have even seen it near 70c sometimes.
He dont really believe me its to high since they are rated up to 75c... and temps goes down to 35-40c after couple of mins.
Will this cpu last long if it runs this hot?
No!!
That is way to hot, you could cook a small egg on that chip while gaming and have a snack, and that's not healthy for the chip.
Heat is the enemy, cooling is our friend. (repeat until it becomes ones mantra)

Some things that you may want to check are
a)is the fan on the CPU functioning
and
b)are the clips on the heat sink adjusted properly?
If the fan isn't working...well...it's pretty self-explanatory. A 500 MHz Katmai is going to destroy itself in a hurry with only passive cooling.
If the Heat sink isn't sitting flat on the CPU's heat plate evenly, the heat sink's effectiveness will be negligible ; it won't really do anything at all. I had this same problem with an old Heat sink - the clip was bent to one side, so the heat sink didn't sit flat on the CPU. It was constantly bumping up against the 70C mark.
Well, I guess sometimes I've learned the hard way, but it's learning nonetheless.

reminds me of a qutoe I read once...
"Learn from the mistakes of others... there's not enough time to make them all yourself."

That temperature is FINE! This isnt a CopperMine pplz! my old P2 idled at 55C and topped 75C. But as always, heat is the enemy.
