I'm selling an extra computer to a friend and bought a new full version of Windows Xp Home w/ SP1 to install but ran into a problem. When it's installing and it says Installing Devices with 34 minutes left, it freezes. Now the weird thing is I then installed Windows XP Pro without SP1 and it installs perfectly. Every time I installed Windows I did a full reformat each time to make sure there was nothing on the hard drive. There is some difference between the 2, it's either the Pro version has something Home does not or SP1 is screwing things up.

I've run numerous stress testing and tested the memory with memtest86, this system is rock solid so it can't be a hardware defect. I'm thinking that the mobo may be too old and my next step probably should be to buy a new one. I've read of other people having the exact same problem and using a pci video card allowed them to install Xp, I don't have one though and should my friend ever need to reinstall windows she won't know how to swap hardware like that anyway. I want to make sure she can do it just by rebooting with the Xp disk inside. Microsoft has a couple articles about it but my friend won't be able to do any of this. Should I just buy a new motherboard or do you think maybe a new video card or both? I don't want to waste too much money, I already wasted money on Windows Xp Home.
