View Full Version : A different way to stack fans?

What if you fed the output from one "squirrel-cage" blower into the inlet of another?

I don't have two 'cages so I can't test this. Just another of my weird ideas. :p

Note that air, when passing through a centrifugal fan/blower, basically changes direction 90 degrees. It'll have to come to a halt and then get picked up by the impeller and flung out like in a sling. Stacking centrifugal blowers won't yield much of anything anything. Sure, the second blower might try to speed up if it's a 'constant power' motor and it'll impart some more speed to the air but most of its effort will be wasted on bearing friction.

2 blowers back to back a la silverado :)

Yep, fans in parallel. Double the airflow and since the pressure-producing capability of centrifugal fans is already good enough, you can literally blast the heat away from your mobo/CPU.

Just imagine running two of the "Hoot chute" blowers in parallel at full voltage. Your mobo might become airborne. :D

Don't stop at two.... :D....if your mobo doesn't explode during fan startup.

:( Too much if they are plugged into your mobo headers you will burn them out.

Why not just use the Impeler half of a turbo charger(preferebly a backward curve impeler as they are more efficient), and run it off a 10000RPM 1/2HP 110-20VAC electric motor with a 1:2 pully ratio on it's belt drive system. That should give you fellers more than enough air to play with :P

What's that, was someone thinking "diminishing returns"? I surely hope so as that is all you get with a heatsink if you increase the airflow without proportionaly increasing it's surface area, and decreasing it's thermal resistance.

Watercooling- accept no substitutes! Water works miricals baby!
