I will soon install Corel Linux 2nd Edition. Just want to know if the sympatico High Speed CD-ROM they gave me will work with that OS. And where can I find drivers for NICs, Graphics cards, monitor, cd-rw and DVD-Roms that work with linux ?
Thanks
Unless the CDROM driver is marked as windows only, it should work in Linux. If it is SCSI or ATAPI/IDE then it should work. The speed of the drive usually makes no diff. to Linux.
Most decent distros (have no personal exp. with Corel) come with all the drivers unless your hardware is quitee exotic and rare.
Graphics cards - most are supported nowadays, if your is a Matrox then consider getting a distro with XFree86 4.1 or upgrading XFree86. Nvidia drivers are OK for TNT or older and probably TNT2 and TNT ultra. A bit of mucking about is req'd for GeForce 2 MX or GTs or the GeForce 3. Check the net for details on your card.
Monitors- if you know the HSync and VSync and Max resolution for your monitor you will be fine. Post here again with any problems (if you have any)
DVD roms - will work if ATAPI or SCSI
CDRW if it is SCSI then u r OK.
If IDE you will need to muck about a bit (post here for help)
sorry to be so brief but I need to be in Maths in about 45 seconds.

I have 1 problem and 1 question. the problem : I am trying to dual boot Corel linux and Windows ME, so I fdisk and made 2 partitions (1 fat32 primary partition and one extended partition). I kept 30 GB (out of 37) for windows ME (primary partition), and the other 7GB for Linux (extended partition at the far end of the drive). Now, I can't boot up Linux, and I don't see LILO or anything. How can I make anything to boot into Linux ?
Now, the question : what do you mean by muck ? I have an IDE-ATAPI CD-RW, so ...
And does Linux come with any DVD-software, and if not, where can I get one ?
And will the Sympatico Access Manager work in Linux ? (even though it was created for Windows)
Thanks
You have the 1024 cylinder problem. LILO can not boot kernels after the 1024th cylinder (8Gig). You will need to either:
-use GRUB.
-add lba32 to the start of lilo.conf (kinda pointless as you can't get into linux in the first place...) You will need a lot of help to do this if your a newbie. Me, i use mcedit and hate vi and emacs.
- use FIPs or Partition Magic to reduce your Windows drive to just under 8Gig and add a ~10MB partition within the first 1024 cylinders. This would mean a lot of mucking about and a Linux reinstall. You would then have two partitions for Windows. Also this will be impossible if you have >8gig of stuff on your C: drive.
-Buy a second hdd - expensive but easiest.
If you have any more questions, which is likely, please let everyone know which method you wish to use.
'Mucking About'
CDRWs that are IDE need SCSI emulation. You will need to add
/dev/hdX = ide-scsi
to lilo.conf (X is a letter usually a-d inclusive)
and add something to /etc/modules (not sure what, I'll have a look for you)
You might want to look for a howto on this at www.linuxdoc.org
Post for more info (im in a hurry - double Biology next)

I just downloaded a partitionning program : efdisk. I reformated my HD, in 3 parts, 1 till cylinder 900 is my Linux partition, then, from cylinder 900 to 5124 is my Windows ME partition, then, from cylinder 5124 till 5169 is my Linux Swap Space. Will Linux work this way, and dual boot with Windows ?
Thanks
