View Full Version : Coolers for amd - Intel compatible???
Are the coolers designed for amd processors compatible with intel processors. I'm considering of buying VOLCANO II but it seems to be made for amd. Will it fit with intel celeron800 or do i have to make some modifications.
If it wont fit, whats the best cooler for Celly...
NOTE best means reasonable price and good quality
Thanks

Are you running the chip in a slocket?? I've got a couple thoughts on this, but I'd need to know if you're gonna slotket mount it....

Alpha PEP66 :)
I've seen GlobalWin FOP38's on Slockets too.

I bought a p4 heatsink/fan that is similar to the volcanoe. It fits on my slocket with minimum modifcation. Most socket heatsinks can be modded except the cr*ppy orbs, but I would just buy a heatsink made for your CPU. I only bought a p4 one cuz I had a gift certificate to compusa and the p4 sink was the only OK one they had.

I have a celeron 800 too and defintely go with the sk-6 heat sink and get the delta 38cfm if you dont mind the noise it puts out.

They're usually compatible, except depending on whether or not it's specifically made for an Athlon or an Intel chip, the clip tension may differ. An Athlon die sticks just a couple mm higher up than an FC-PGA CPU does, so if you try putting a cooler whose clips are made ESPECIALLY for a Socket-370 CPU on an Athlon or Duron, the clip tension may be too high, and you risk smooshing your core. It's easy enough to adjust clip tension, though....take the fan off, bend it a little one way or another, and see how she fits!
Well, I've got a Millennium Glaciator running on a P/// 700E FC-PGA, slocket mounted. The only thing I had to modify in any way is the ZIF arm on the slotket. If it's a metal arm, that's bent up above the top of the socket, you'll need to take a couple of pairs of pliers, and straighten the metal arm out, so it sits below the top of the socket.
The Glaciator isn't milled in this area like the Alpha PEP66T is, to clear that ZIF arm. This is the quick fix for that.
BTW...the Glaciator keeps the P/// just as cool at the PEP66T does, is a bunch quieter, and doesn't block a DIMM slot.
Food for thought....=)

I say that in most cases you need to check the compasitors around the board that will hold you back a lot in the fact that your heatsink might not sit right.
If its a Low celeron 633 or below I would say if your going Volcano go with a Volcano3. I have one and I can cool my 633 up to 952 with no problems but I am going to spend more cash then that because I want something better. People always skimp on the cooling. Bad idea cooling is what will give you a better Oc I look at it like this is you want to Oc then you need to spend the cash for good cooling not crap cooling. Now don't get me wrong the V3 is good but just not good enough. The fan on the heatsink only puts out something like 23cfm not enough for me.
Good luck on that Oc.
Ps don't skimp on the cooling for you may wake up one day to find a burnt CPU.
There are some cooler that can do that...
Mast probably the socket's 360 Fc-Pga
