I need Instructions for setting up windows 2000 server. I have two comps at home. One running 2k server and one running 2k pro. Id like to run server as a domain controller, dns server, and dhcp server and have the other workstation log in to it. I have the nic cards all installed and a cross cable but I have no clue how to set up all the stuff correctly on the server....
I believe that only during setup of Win2k server can you make it a domain controller. Might have to reinstall. But once you set the server up to be a domain controller just have the workstation join the domain and you should be cool. :)

It can be promoted to a domain controller, but once done can not be demoted. It will be a DC until you reload.
For more help on how to set up a network give www.practicallynetworked.com a look, they have lots of information at that place.
to promote a win2k server or advance server to a DC run the DCPROMO command from the RUN command.
to add other services go to add remove windows components they are in the under the tcp/ip services .(or from the configure ur sever wizard)
go into the DC pc and create a computer account to ur WIN2K pro pc ( use it's NETBIOS name) to get it right click into MY COMUTER icon then switch to the NETWORK IDENTIFICATION menu in SYSTEM PROPERTIES u will find it next to FULL COMUTER NAME.
create a user account too.
u can set its permissions from its properties.
after crating the computer account tell ur PRo machine to join the domain.
btw computers and users accounts are created from domain users an computers. remember u can't create local users on ur domain controller.
the dns needs some configuration in creating ZONES ( which is kinda straight forward if u use the wizard) the same thing goes for the DHCP (the scopes should be created by the wizard too).
if u need more help see the windows help it's usefull (that's weird from micrisoft!) but i don't think u will need any.
and don't forget to use the DC ip adress to configure ur PRO machine (in the dns zone in the tcp/ip configuration).
hope that i've helped!
see ya
....and my 2 cents worth....you CAN demote a DC to a member server running dcpromo also
Ok, so i can't edit my previous message....anyway....i'm assuming your installing DNS because your installing Active Directory and thats fine...but when you choose a domain name make sure its not something being used already like microsoft.com or something also make sure its not replicating to other servers also...assuming your "live and in color" on the internet unless of course you have a registered domain name already with ICANN or Internic or whomever is in charge of domains this week. Also you may want to look into a domain redirector service if you have a dynamic ip address such as dns2go.com or zerohype.com they basically track your dynamic ip and resolve it to a domain name which would be your server. Also in configuring DNS you may need to enable forwarders to properly resolve the FQDN of the sites your trying to browse too....just wanted to point this stuff out before you hook up whatever connection you have to the internet
