I know someone, and he's having a bit of a problem. I don't know the specifics yet, but he says his rig is locking /hanging in the BIOS during boot.

He thinks it's the CPU (intel P/// 850E slot 1), but I say that if it's booting at all, the cpu is ok.

Um...I'm right, right??? If the system is at least getting into the BIOS, that rules out the CPU as the problem, and the problem lies in either the BIOS settings, or with another piece of hardware...right?

TIA!!

If its a newly built system, check the jumpers etc. could be heat? Currupted BIOS...maybe even an install of Windows went bad if its hanging after the 2 POST screens.

But it wouldn't be a bad cpu, right?? That's what I'm getting at....=)

Its probably not a bad cpu.
If it was a socket cpu a chipped or cracked core might allow the cpu to work but with errors but getting that on a slot cpu is very rare.
So if it boots I would guess a 98% chance the cpu is good.
But it would not be impossible for the cpu to be the cause of the problem.

Did this help?
Probably not, try a different cpu and then you will know for sure.

Ditto, about 97.85% likely not the cpu. Try wiggling the video card, that's kept me scratching my head more than once in the past.
