View Full Version : Keeping a T-bird 1.4 ghz Cool

I'm about to order a AMD Thunderbird 1.4 Ghz processor and the Abit KG7 Raid mobo. Right now, I'm not looking to overclock the processor just yet, but I'd like to keep it at a safe running temperature. What would be a safe running temperature for the processor, and which heatsink and fan should I use for it?
I'd like to get opinions on heatsinks and fans so that I can make a decision on which one to get.
Thanks,
PhatKirby

I am currently considering the Dragon Orb 3, but I hear that's not too good. I'd like some more opinions on that. Also, the CAK38 seems like it would be too noisy. I've heard that it sounded like a vacuum, and also heard it sounded like a 747. Now, I don't know if these are just exagerations, or will it make my room un-bearable to live in.. Can someone give me a REAL example of what the Cak sounds like?
And some other suggestions for heatsinks/fans would also be appreciated.
The cak 38 is loud, but they are one of the best! Atleast I think
so.

STAY AWAY FROM THE ORB AT ALL COSTS!! There are many other heatsinks out there that perform alot better than the orb. Do the research on this siye and the many others and please re-think your logic. I would rather use the stock Coolmaster than the orb.
thermoengine with Delta, no comparison with others. it really rules

Like, can someone give me a comparison on how loud the Cak38 is?
What's a thermoengine with Delta? What company makes that?
Can you please link me up?
Thanks,

The ThermalRight SK-6, GlobalWin CAK38, Kaine Hedgehod 238, Swiftech MC462A. They all do good jobs on overclocked AMD processors - with the Swiftech being about the best, if you want to pay the 75.00 for it. On my 1.4 bird, I have the Swiftech with a Delta 80mm 60cfm fan on it. 1.4@1.622 with a room temp of 30c, the Idle temp is about 32c, and full load 36c running Seti@home 24/7.
When did the Glaciator fall out of favor? Its a top tier cooler.

Sorry - accidentally forgot it. The Glaciator is also an outstanding HSF.
My 1.4ghz just arrived yesterday, and my Taisol Heatsink with the copper insert ( too lazy to look for model number :D ) is wooping some serious ass. Don't count that heatsink out just yet, it's got a great clip, isn't loud ( unlike the others ), and is well priced.
here is a reseller for the thermoinengine made by thermosonic, i say delta, cause it has a very efficient delta -38 cfm fan on it, best of all s/h is only 5$, the fan is bigger than from the foto http://www.bestbyte.net/Product.cfm?ProductID=509&CategoryID=6&Keyword=

Read this article for some decent infor concerning coolers.
It doesn't have the most modern ones in there. But it does have a lot of pretty good ones.

Does anyone know of a site where I can go and compare prices and specs of these HSF's and then order them? I visit some sites, and they don't show too many of the fans, so I don't have as big of a variety to choose from.
What does a CAK38 sound like? Does it really sound like a vacuum? I'd like an example of how loud it is.
